We have produced a MP3 version of our first episode of Doctor Who: Podshock. Although we recommend listening to the AAC format version, for those that want listen to the first episode in as a MP3, you can download this version:

Doctor Who: Podshock - Episode 1 (MP3 audio format, 23.3 MB)

The AAC version of the podcast will give you a better sounding file at the same file size, it will be bookmarkable via iTunes/iPod (iTunes 4.9 or later and latter iPod models). Plus in the near future we hope to move over to the Enhanced Podcast AAC audio format which will offer chapter stops, multiple images, and URL links.

Guys, do you want people to listen or don't you? You're shooting yourselves in the feet if you insist on sticking to AAC for your main feed.

As it happens I subscribed in iTunes and I listened on my iPod, but when I saw it was an AAC file I thought, "Cool, this must be an 'enhanced' podcast, with chapters and changing artwork." But it isn't. You say that it may be enhanced in the future, but is that sufficient justification for excluding people now? (BTW, even mp3s are bookmarkable in iTunes 4.9.)

Sometimes I copy my "unplayed" podcasts to an iRiver. I usually do this in a hurry, before leaving for work, and I certainly don't have time to convert from AAC, so this podcast will simply be left behind.

What about people using, say, iPodder and Windows Media Player (or WinAmp, or RealPlayer)? Dou really think they'll bother to download an mp3 manually, when other podcasts come to them automagically?

It's true that people can convert if they really need to, but most likely the majority simply won't bother. They'll just move on to some other podcast.

By all means provide an AAC version for those who appreciate the higher fidelity and smaller downloads of AAC compression, but for everyone else -- especially those using something other than iTunes and iPod -- please provide your podcast in mp3 format. It's what people expect. I believe you've got it the wrong way round: if you don't have the badndwidth to provide two feeds, you need to provide mp3s in your feed, with a manually available AAC download for those that want it.

Aim for the widest audience. That means mp3.
