Boston Globe Ranks Doctor Who # 8 in Top 50 Sci-Fi Shows

    Doctor Who News

The Boston Globe newspaper has rated The Top Science Fiction Television Shows of All Time and within that list among the top ten Doctor Who ranks as number 8 in the list. Unfortunately, it appears the newspaper is completely unaware that the series has been renewed with new episodes this year, and new episodes planned for the next two years as well and hopefully onward.

"Sure, many of the monsters were terribly cheesy, but it is a classic nonetheless," states the article.

Actually if you realize that the classic series has not been broadcast in the U.S. in some number of years now and the new series has yet been broadcast at all yet in the U.S., it may be a miracle that Doctor Who even made this mainstream list at all, let alone making it within the top ten.

The list is pretty generous in how it defines science fiction though. There are several shows that are merely super-hero fantasy shows (i.e. Batman (1966) is included on the list) as well as shows such as The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (while sure it had it's imaginative tech gadgets just like Bond but I wouldn't consider it a science fiction show really).

Rounding out the top ten are the following:

  • 10 - Sliders
  • 09 - Mystery Science Theater 3000
  • 08 - Doctor Who
  • 07 - The Twilight Zone (original series)
  • 06 - Stargate SG-1
  • 05 - Babylon 5
  • 04 - The X-Files
  • 03 - Star Trek: The Next Generation
  • 02 - Battlestar Galactica (New) (2003-present)
  • 01 - Star Trek (the original series)

The top 50 list is fairly odd in some of its selections... For example, the television series of Logan's Run made the list ranking #15... While I do recall watching this series when it was on (I believe only one season) in the mid-70's.. I don't think it has been seen since, at least not by me. Yet, unless I missed it, I don't think Farscape made the list at all... but Stargate SG-I made it to number 6?? I guess Blake's 7 would be too much to ask for this mainstream American list.

While many super-hero legends have some science-fiction elements to them (i.e. Superman came from another planet, The Greatest American Hero suit came from aliens I believe, etc.) but many of them I would not consider to be 'science fiction' shows. Yet many populate this top 50 list.

As I commented above, it is odd that Farscape did not make the list at all, and if it lists shows such as The Avengers, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Wild, Wild West, Batman, etc... then a show such as The Prisoner should have also been included, yet it too is absent.

    Louis,

I'm surprised - American TV has always considered super-hero stories as science fiction.

Now the question is, was this done by a Globe reporter or a "special correspondent"? Or maybe even a nationally distributed story, gotten off of the AP?

For some reason, I could not reply to your message directly, so I am replying here... I am not sure about the article, I don't believe the writer is even listed... at least on the boston.com version of it.

I did check it out. It's funny they don't list the author, unless it the results of a
poll that was up on boston.com.
