You made a comment in the show about no other US TV show changing
characters mid-show, like doctor who does with each regeneration. One
exception came to mind, Babylon 5, where the main character leaves after
the first episode and is replace with a brand new character. The show
continued to be successful ever with it's lead character leaving. I'm sure
there are other examples too. Doctor Who is an amazing show, but lets not
    go overboard in praising it.

Here's an interesting idea. If the BBC can not get a US network to broadcast Doctor Who, maybe they could team up with Apple and release it on the iTunes music store? The video format is nice, and the higer quality ones (Such as "Knight Rider") display well on a PC, so no iPod needed. I think most fans would be willing to pay 1.99 per a episode to get the show. I know I would be.
