We are sad to report that Gary Downie, former Production Manager for Doctor Who has lost his long fight with cancer this morning. Partner of the late long time Doctor Who producer, John Nathan-Turner, Gary Downie had also published the Doctor Who Cookbook, he served as production manager on Doctor Who and Star Cops and worked as assistant floor manager on All Creatures Great and Small. He appeared often at Doctor Who conventions as well as providing supplemental extras for The Two Doctors DVD.

Outpost Gallifrey broke the news from from a friend of Gary Downie who had reported it to the Doctor Who Restoration Team.

    Gary Downie Dies

I am saddened and shocked... I had not known he was battling cancer. I the privilege of spending the afternoon with Gary Downie along with John Nathan-Turner during a joint book signing appearance in Manhattan in the '80s. They were both were very interesting and friendly.

What is also sad is that at least I knew the memory of JNT... that is JNT's experiences and feelings while working on Doctor Who would be kept alive through Gary. An example of that would be the two-part interview with Gary Downie that appeared in Doctor Who Monthly a couple of years ago.

It is always sad when we loose people that were involved in the series, and we have been loosing many that had worked in the series in the 60's and 70's now... but it seems even more so with folks involved in the show in the 80's because it still seems so recent.

I too had no idea Gary was sick. I hope that he didn't suffer much and passed
    peacefully.

I really enjoyed his segment on The Two Doctors DVD...He was funny,
entertaining, and insightful and I think it was one of the best Who DVD extras of
all. I was really hoping they'd have done more with him in the future.

    Godspeed Gary.
