The Sun Online is reporting in a story, Dr Who's K9 gets a lead that once again K-9 is being spun off in a new series outside of Doctor Who.
As we previously reported in Doctor Who Reunited with K9 that our favourite canine droid is returning in the 2006 series of Doctor Who along with Elizabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith) in episode 3, School Reunion written by Toby Whithouse and directed by James Hawes.
Now The Sun tabloid reports that an insider has told them, “It would have been a shame to put K9 back in his kennel, so we’ve come up with an idea for another drama.
“It’s early days but K9 and Elizabeth Sladen are inseparable characters.
“There are loads of things we can do with Doctor Who. It’s one of the most popular shows on TV and viewers can’t seem to get enough of it.”
The BBC has not confirmed any new K9 series at this time.
We originally got word of a possible new K9 series in October 2005 when a video interview with Bob Baker and Paul Tams at The Who Shop in London dating back to the Spring of 2005 spoke of a new K9 series was brought to our attention by forum poster, PolyphonicAsthma. At the time we could not confirm a new K9 spin-off series, nor can we confirm if the series mentioned in this interview is related in any way to the new spin-off series being reported by The Sun now.
This of course would not be the first time K9 has been spun off as a new series outside of Doctor Who. A pilot for a new series, K9 and Company which also paired K9 with Elizabeth Sladen was first transmitted on the BBC on the 28th of December 1981. It was never given a go-ahead for a series though. Only the pilot episode was made.
Thanks to Taras Hnatyshyn for originally reporting The Sun Online article in our forum thread, K9 & Co. Mk. 2. The original thread about a new K9 series from an interview with Bob Baker and Paul Tams can be found in our forum thread, K9 New Tails.
