Regarding the Dalek reviews, the Dalek being touched by a time traveller is what allows it to rejuvinate itself, not just a normal being. A thread of higher forms and the Time War runs throughout the first series, and the Daleks being time travellers as well are the perfect foils to the Time Lords in the back story.

Also, what this episode brings with it a darkness to the series. There is little humor in this serious story. This is my second favorite series one story.

Colin Baker's Dalek story is Revelation of the Daleks.

    Impact of the Daleks.

There are many factors regarding why the Daleks might make more of an impact in one country vs. another but I think Louis really hit the nail on the head when he brought up the issue of age. I think the Daleks have far more of an impact on an individual viewer if they saw them as a young child and grew up with the Daleks.

I was in the UK last year a couple of weeks after Dalek had been broadcast and it was amazing to see the reaction of yonge children to that Dalek episode. Three weeks earlier they had never heard of the Daleks but now they were consumed with them. Their manner on screen is a big part of it but I think that even after mroe than 40 years it's that unique alien shape that gets them. Here in Toronto I later saw a similar reaction from young children who were completely facinated with the shape of the Daleks. I think you need to be really young to have them make a really strong impression.

    Dalek.

As an Aussie I remember the old 6:00pm showings on Aunty ABC. So the Daleks ment something to me. The think I liked was that every weakness of the Darlek was tranformed into a strength (unlike the 5 Doctors when the 1st Doctor was able to push a dalek down a ramp and escape, the new hardness version would have toasted the old bugger and be done with it....So I flet the the episode was very strong.

    4.5 Tardis groans from me.
