Big Finish 045 - Project Lazarus

DW Reviews Big Finish 045 – Project Lazarus (Part 1):

Colin Baker as the 6th Doctor with Maggie Stables as Evelyn Smythe

The more astute readers of my reviews of Big Finish may have noticed that when I wrote my review of 023 – Project Twilight I removed the “Mostly spoiler Free” tag. This wasn’t an omission; It was very deliberate. In thinking about reviewing Project Twilight I knew that I should go on to look at Project Lazarus because it is the most direct story arc. I also knew that when Lazarus came to paper I would have to spoil one or both of the episodes so that the reader could understand why the two episodes are related. I will however try to spoil as little as possible. I also knew that the only way that I could look at Lazarus would be to treat it as two different episodes for reasons that there are two separate doctors (or maybe three.) As far as I am aware; this story arc is the only time that Big Finish has used two Doctors without it being a multiple Doctor episode.

    (continues below)

The Doctor and Evelyn arrive in a forest in Norway to find Cassie Schofield who was infected with the Twilight virus near the end of Project Twilight. The Doctor has found a cure but despite his attempts to materialise near to the time that they left Cassie the Tardis has own ideas and arrives some years later. Unbeknownst to all a scientist is also in the forest hunting a Norwegian myth which turns out to be a stranded alien being called the Houdran. The Houdran is captured just in time for Nimrod to swoop and all are transported to The Forge in England. As I mentioned in my review for Project Twilight the Forge seems to be where Russell Davies took his inspiration for Torchwood from. Its remit is use alien technology for its own benefit and even has its own bigot (sergeant Frith.) As Evelyn discovers that Cassie has been brainwashed by the Forge and attempts to undo the damage the Doctor learns that Nimrod wants to know the secret of regeneration and he is prepared to kill the Doctor to steal it. This episode also begins another story arc which as of yet is unfulfilled.

Big Finish 045 – Project Lazarus (Part 2):

Sylvester McCoy as the 7th Doctor and Colin Baker.

The Doctor is alerted to a tear in the fabric of time and materializes the Tardis on Dartmoor to investigate and put an end to it. He knows the Forge is responsible and exits a lift (elevator) with the wonderful line; “Ground floor: Certain capture and torture.” He discovers that the Houdran race is trying to invade earth via a time space portal and that the Forge is opening that portal. Much to the Doctors surprise he learns that his previous incarnation is assisting the Forge. The problem for the 7th Doctor is that he cannot remember the his previous self helping the Forge.

Whether you count this as one story or two it is an excellent continuation of the Project Twilight story arc. Once again supported by an excellent cast; Stephen Chance (Nimrod) and Rosie Cavaliero reprise their roles from Project Twilight and Adam Woodroffe also shines as Sergeant Frith. I wonder if with Torchwood coming to the fore in the Television series Big Finish will bring back Nimrod and the Forge. If you enjoyed Project Twilight I highly recommend Project Lazarus.

I too really enjoyed this episode, coming off the back of some less enjoyable stories (i) the pirates which was very uneven, tried to be radically different but didn't work too well in my opinion - though ultimately the end was satisfying; (ii) Creatures of Beauty which was very disjointed with too much hoping backward and forward in the timeline (I guess so the payoff can be delivered at the end)

As I have said elsewhere it seemed to me that Yvonne Hartman's Torchwood seemed strongly based on the Forge - similar ethics, goal and outlook.

Hard to say much else about this episode without giving away the twists, just say in episode 2, I exected that the part with the next seventh doctor was going to happen for a different reason.
