Big Finish 088 – Memory Lane

DW Reviews Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor with India Fisher as Charley and Conrad Westmaas as C'Rizz

What an unfortunate title for this Big Finish play. A very short trip down memory lane finds that only a short five Big Finish stories and one Eighth Doctor story previously this doctor materialised the Tardis inside a prison. I'll bet that you can't guess where he is for this play?

Whereas Something Inside (BF – 083) was a very dark story for this incarnation of the Doctor, Memory Lane is much lighter and (dare I say it) almost fun.

The Doctor Charley and C’rizz land in the living room of a house that appears to be English suburbia in all of its mind numbing uniformity; except that in this case every house is actually identical.

Once the Doctor and his companions step outside for an ice cream they realise that they have not only lost the Tardis but also the house where it materialised. After knocking on several doors they learn that not only are the houses identical but so are their owners.

    (continues below)

Of course we are once again inside a prison, constructed for an astronaut (Tom Braudy) who crash landed on the planet many years ago. Tom believes that he is only 10 ˝ years old and the illusion of suburbia has been created to keep Tom passive. Meanwhile Kim Kronotska (a former crew member) who escaped the crash has returned to try and free Tom. The two parties form an uneasy alliance to try to discover what is going on and free the stranded Tom.

Whilst I have the usual problems with Big Finish seeming to be trapped in story loops where they seem to constantly repeat the same plot my opinion on this story has mellowed in the months since its release. My first thoughts were; Something Inside, Red and now Memory Lane all within 5 months. "I need to review another Doctor Who prison story like I need a hole in the proverbial noggin."

After the initial reluctance and disappointment had dissipated I began to feel a little better about this play. If this story has a flaw then the ending is slightly weak and confusing. I have seen some discussion on the forums that this story adds something to what we know about C’rizz but I didn’t see it. The story only confirms something that happened in Terror Firma.

I could recommend this play to a new listener to Big Finish wanting to experience the eighth incarnation of the Doctor but I would also say that there are far better examples in the back catalogue.

All in all not a bad story but there are better.

OK, so this is another prison, but this is a very unique prison, and the concepts are handled well and I enjoyed this play more than I thought I would from the trailers that I heard. Though the ending may not seem strong, at least it makes sense. Now, I'm hungry for an ice cream cone with a flake!
