Casting News on X-Mas Special, Series Four

Doctor Who NewsHadn't seen anyone else posting this, so thought I'd pitch in. It's official: Martha Jones will be back in Series Four, though not for the entire run. She'll rejoin the Doctor and his new companion midway through the series, but not till she's appeared in three episodes of the spinoff "Torchwood."

Also, Kylie Minogue has been confirmed as being the special guest star of the Doctor Who Christmas special, "Voyage of the Damned." This of course after the production team had denied Ms. Minogue would be coming to the show. Then again, they denied that Martha was leaving at the end of this season, and that Rose was leaving at the end of last season...you get the picture.

And who will be the Doctor's new companion? Well, she isn't exactly new...Catherine Tate will reprise her role of Donna Noble from the 2006 X-Mas special, "The Runaway Bride." Ms. Tate will join David Tennant for the entire 13-episode run of Series Four.

Here's the links to the official announcements for each item, in the order they were referenced above.

With this news, and the mess of a season finale (imo), maybe it really *is* time for RTD to move on. With a couple of exceptions ("Blink" and the mid-series two-parter "Human Nature" and "Family of Blood"), this has year has fallen quite short of expectations. I like Freema. Her "difficulties" this whole series has been because she's had to fit into formulaic stories that have been at least somewhat rehashed (poorly) from previous series. I don't doubt that SOMEONE could write cleverly for Catherine Tate (*not* a best choice), but I truly doubt that this team can rise to the occasion. After a *decent* start ("Utopia") the final two parts of the series capper were embarrassing. Given the budget and the acting talent, a HUGE disappointment. The prospects for next year, with RTD *AND* Tennant eying the door is unlikely to improve. I hope I'm wrong.

Admittedly I wish that Martha were sticking around for the entire series 4, but I understand some of the dilemma faced. Martha Jones was very much the equal of the Doctor, and in fact spent much of series 3 saving him (or taking care of him). This is not the roll of a companion and as best I can tell she had spent a minimum of two years in the Tardis, and was ready to move on.

Donna represents what the doctor was looking forward to at the end of Series 3 before the Master died, someone to take care of. I can only hope that the stories do not fall into a Scooby Doo paradox where Daphne (now played by Katherine Tate as Donna) gets trapped or kidnapped and the gang (all 4 played superiorly by the Doctor) need to save her. Although this harkens back to just about every female companion in the shows history I would have hoped we moved beyond that stereo typed damsel in distress companion after Rose left. That story line gets old very fast and eventually I find myself hoping the writers pull an Adric, and not the cheap cop out Rose "death" either.

I was not disappointed with the series 3 story telling, but I do feel that perhaps it is time for RTD to hang up his hat and move on to other projects (like improving Torchwood.). There is a great deal of talent already on hand that could take over and improve on the sound foundations he has laid. I await eagerly the death... er companionship Donna will bring to the Doctor.

I have finally just watched the last episode of the series 3, Last of the Time
Lords. I have watched it live for the 3rd and final time on BBC 3. I loved it!
There is something about watching the Doctor Who programme live on the
telly, you can not pause it, you can not afford to turn around incase you miss
something, it some how focuses the senses and becomes all encompassing,
just like watching a movie at the cinema you can't pause it!

That's the way I like to view Doctor Who.

At the end of the broadcast on BBC3 It was announced (and confirmed)
Martha Jones is leaving Doctor Who and joining Torchwood.
