Here in Canada, we're restricted from viewing feeds of streaming shows at places like www.abc.com because we're not US residents. This is surprising, considering these shows air at the same time in Canada. Originally I thought networks did this kind of thing to protect DVD sales. I remember they wouldn't sell DVDs of 28 Days Later in Canada until the movie was released here in theaters (a year after the UK release). Then I thought they were doing this to protect the networks who wanted ratings, but considering that our networks show it at the same time, that can't be the case. I can only think that the reason they protect these streams is to lock people into country specific advertising that might not pertain to non-US viewers. Annoying stuff really. It just means Canadian customers will turn to piracy in order to view missed episodes, which is a bit of a missed opportunity for potential advertising.
It's also a bit silly, as there are lots of proxy servers that allow people to view country specific content. I know I certainly had no trouble finding a UK proxy server to surf through to the Sarah Jane website to view it's contents.
As always, these kinds of restrictions are more "security through obscurity", much like DRM, which always gets hacked a few days after it's implemented anyway. In the end, there's always a backdoor, even if it needs to be people bringing PAL VHS tapes over the ocean to NTSC shores (aww, the 80s). I wish they'd just take all that money they sink into these useless pursuits and give it to somebody that can put it to better use (Children In Need anyone?).
Incidentally, I just wanted to say congratulations on the history of the show. I've been listening to the show ever since I first heard episode ten. I tripped across it on the web (Demonoid? 'Nuff said) and have been listening ever since. Episode 66 seems to me to be as much a watermark to congratulate the team over as any episode is. Just adding my two cents. And yes, when you guys make obscure references to Roger Waters' The Body, there ARE people out there that get the joke.
Keep up the great work. You deserve the praise.
