See the Thread 'Support This Forum and Bid!' to make a bid for the 'Captain Jack/Empty Child' set. Don't make a payment just state it's value. At the end of this month (March '07) the highest bidder will be asked to make his or her PayPal donation and provide an address for me to send the item to. Thanks daveac.

Just to clarify what James says about the TV Lic. here in the UK.

Not everyone needs a licence - but every 'household' needs a licence. So a family of five need just the one licence.

The people most often caught out are students starting at University when they suddenly find they have to get one if the want to watch TV in their room (since the rooms in halls of residence have locks on the doors - each one its deemed to be a 'household' requiring a TV licence.

This my explain why lots of students have given up TV watching and spend their time watching stuff on the net - as the licence is only needed to watch 'broadcast' programmes.

    Cheers, daveac

re: regulation of independent television in the UK

I'm not quite sure what James was getting at about the BBC being the regulator of commercial broadcasters in the UK. Were this really the case I would have to imagine that ITV never would have happened as the BBC and John Reith were so opposed to the idea at the time back in 1954.

Over the years there have been a whole bunch of regulators of commercial television including the Independent Broadcasting Authority, the Independent Television Commission and others. All have since been amalgamated into Ofcom.

James' guide to TV licences has opened a bit of a can of worms - you can no
longer buy a TV licences in a post office, you can get them by direct debit or at
some corner shops and petrol stations with paypoint terminals. And lets hear
about the vans full of aerials!
