BREAKING NEWS: David Tennant who has been playing the title role (as the 10th Doctor) in the hit series Doctor Who since picking up where Christopher Eccleston left the role in 2005 has announced that his departure from the series will be after he has completed the current line up of four specials. The first being this December's Christmas special and the remainder of specials are being shown throughout 2009 and early 2010.

This puts to rest recent rumours reporting that he had been signed to extend his contract to 2011.

I won't quite go so far as to say I'm surprised but I am saddened at the news. Tennant has been my favorite actor in the role, though I have to qualify that by saying I have only really seen him and Peter Davison for any length of time and never saw Troughton, Hartnell, or C. Baker in the role at all.

I agree with his sentiment that he needed to realize there is a time to move on and not get tired of the part or wear it out for the fans.

Here's to a long fruitful career for Tennant and that his replacement will bring just as much energy and enthusiasm to the role in 2010.

Well, that's unfortunate. I was hoping for a last full season before his departure. But now this opens up another "can of worms" - Who will replace him when he is done?

There has already been speculation about who is going to replace David but at this point it's merely gossip and conjecture. It will be hard to find an actor to play the role of "The Doctor" but the speculation will create publicity for the show at it's 5th Season return.

We'll miss you as "The Doctor".
