Doctor Who: Podshock - Episode 40

This reply was taken from what I already wrote in the Forums under the thread "Podshock #40"

Well, I must say that I still don't buy that the Doctor fell in "love" in the episode, The Girl in the Fireplace. I am an old romantic, and I still don't buy it... why would he? What is so special about her outside of the whole mind-meld "sharing of thoughts" deal? (Which is a whole other matter I won't get into now)... I think it was a special relationship because of the whole mind-meld thing and the fact the he is aware that he has been with her all of her life in a manner of speaking... He cares for her a great deal, but I don't think it was any more than the way he cares for Rose for that matter.

Having said that, I am feel fortunate that I didn't get the sense that he "fell in love" with her in this story because if I did, I think I would have taken me out of the story even more so because it would be so uncharacteristic of the Doctor to do so. It was bad enough that the story had so many other aspects that took me out of the story... the concept that the Doctor fell in love with someone so quickly and indiscriminately would just have added to the mess. Yes, he was ecstatic once he knew who she was, but the Doctor is often ecstatic over meeting historical people... remember Charles Dickens and the carriage ride? I don't think he "fell in love" Charles Dickens... or did he? I guess I need to watch The Unquiet Dead again ;o)

The Doctor is a bit of an 'over the top' kind of guy. He didn't let the laws of Gallifrey or the Timelords stop him... I don't think he would have let anything else stop him from having some more time with her if he really felt that strongly for her. A special relationship? Yes. Heads over heels in love? No, I am sorry, I don't buy it. Or perhaps I just don't want to buy it.

The Doctor is capable of having strong feelings, we have seen it many times throughout the years with is companions. I see his relationship with Madame Du Pompadour being similar in that nature. So in that sense, he loved all his companions and Madame Du Pompadour as well. In that context, I can accept it.
