Thanks so much teshia!
I believe the restrictions made to downloadable content such as television and movies between counties is similar to the region coding restrictions on DVDs. Studios don't want viewers/listeners in other countries receiving their content, even via legal means because it weakens the marketplace when they try to sell their product (television series or movies) to networks and distribution channels in other countries. In other words, a particular television series could be in it's third season in the US, but in the UK they are still in the second series. So they wouldn't want people in the UK to purchase the third season episodes from the US iTunes store prior to the studio making it available to whatever company they sold the license to show them in the UK.
I believe that is their thinking anyway, not that I necessarily agree with it. As you said, there will always be a backdoor to their 'schemes' that in the end all the protection schemes are really unnecessary.

Oh, I know that both Ken and I own copies of Roger Water's Music from The Body (though admittedly it is not one of my most played albums)... James may as well, I am not sure. I am glad all our obscure references don't go to waste.
Cheers,
Louis
