I was speaking of an encore presentation within a week's time of the original airing. It was very rare until fairly recently that a particular program or episode would be shown again within a week's time of its original airing. I wasn't really speaking of what we typically refer to as "reruns" or syndication of previously aired series.
But yes, your point is taken in the UK, where even what we know as "reruns" and syndication had been a rarity there. Hence one of the reasons that the Doctor Who novelizations did as well as they did was because at one point that was the only way to relive a past episode/story.
