The main problem with doing two feeds, one for AAC and one for older MP3 format is the cost of the extra bandwidth it would require, not to mention hosting twice as many episodes the server. We have thought about switching to the older MP3 format and just using that alone, but if we go that route we would not be able to eventually move up to the "Enhanced Podcast" format that will offer chapters, URL links, and various images embedded within the podcast. This is only available with the newer AAC format. AAC also offers a better quality sound at the same relative file size of MP3.
Having said all that, we are still seeing what we can do to accommodate both those that want AAC file format and those that want MP3 format podcasts. There's no question that MP3 is more compatible with everything out there. We may forego the benefits of AAC and go with MP3... In the meantime, one can transfer the AAC files easily to MP3 using iTunes (or a similar audio utility with this function).
