In the United States, television stations which aired the classic series of Doctor Who had a choice when they licensed the program from the distributor (Lionheart) to air the series in the original 25 minute episodes, known as episodic format, or all the episodes of stories edited into movie versions, also known as the omnibus format, without cliffhangers.
Also, the 45 minute episodes of season 21 were cut down into 25 minute episodes for those stations airing in episodic format in a half hour time slot.
This is a question slanted towards those watching the program outside of the UK, primarily in the US, where there was a choice as to how the series was shown on the various local stations.
