I think that was perfectly fitting with our Doctor; he "joined" the domestic thing last year and those relationships ended in heartache - at least with him alone. He could not join Donna for Christmas because of the memories and, I really think, the attachments that result from actually knowing the humans.
Also, I watched the Christmas special again after listening to this podshock, and I think that even though the Doctor did ask Donna to join him traveling, he almost seemed...shocked, yes that's a good word, shocked that the offer came out of his mouth. So I don't think he really meant to ask her to join, he just was so lonely.
