BBC signs up for more of Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures (guardian.co.uk)
Didn't we already suspect this before they started filming series 2? After all, iirc, the original talk of series 2 was doing 24 episodes - which would end up being two full series worth.
Either way, I'm glad we're getting another series. I think that, of all three shows, SJA is consistently the best writing of the three.
Well, I think suspect is the operative word there. A report that came out last year seemed to cast some doubt on the financial viability of new product from BBC Wales, and the move to de-couple production of series 2 from series 3 was taken because the CBBC could no longer afford it on its 2008 budget. Add to that the fact that RTD has announced his departure, and there was a genuine risk that, despite its popularity, SJA might not have returned. The real test will be what will happen in 2010, after RTD has officially departed. Will he remain nominally attached to that project, from which he's not, I don't think, announced a definitive departure? Will Moffat "inherit" the program? Or will everyone pack it in while it's still successful?
I actually think that RTD is less of an issue with the SJA than "Doctor Who" (which was genuinely at risk after RTD's departure). The show is increasingly becoming incredibly useful to the BBC as its flagship "Children's TV drama" at a time when this field is being radically pruned back as too expensive.
As long as it does respectable viewing figures, I think the BBC will still want it to show that it invests licence fee money into homegrown children's drama.
BIG NEWS for "Sarah Jane Adventures"
David Tennant will appear in the series as the Doctor.
Sources fromn the Guardian say that he will appear in the autumn (in two episodes) before the "Doctor Who" specials this winter.

EDIT: It appears that Outpost Gallifrey has also reported this story on their site. Their report comes from the BBC Press Office. Here is a link to the BBC site:
The Doctor to appear in CBBC drama The Sarah Jane Adventures
I was glad to learn it was not just a cameo role either for David Tennant, which I initially assumed it would most likely be.
Cheers,
Louis

Also of note: An earlier story (from yesterday) reports that the two episode with David Tennant will be episodes 5 and 6. As of now the title is unknown.

Tennant to appear in 'Sarah Jane Adventures'
As you can see in the article it states when his appearance is in the last paragraph.
I won't say it, I won't say it, I won't...(coughs) GIMMICK!!!
The only interesting thing there is that Sarah will get someone to complete her family, someone that interests her. Watch it be an alien in disguise to fool both her and us. Ahh and an alien who plays games and a weed that attacks Earth. Seen that anywhere?
Seriously: I'm beginning to think the original K9 and COMPANY plotlines had more going for it as a series.
I hate to say it, but I must agree with Chase: this feels like a gimmick.
Thanks, Silvanthalas. Wouldn't it have been...DW wise...better to have had the new team prepare earlier and then start a new season NOW instead of ANOTHER YEAR from now?
I assume you mean for DW, Chase?
They're going to be filming DW series 5 very soon for next spring, if they haven't started already. Considering that they still had to film the Tennant specials, there really wasn't much of a chance of seeing series 5 with Smith before next year anyways.
