Outpost Gallifrey is reporting that filming for Torchwood has been delayed until June or July, and that James Hawes had to bow out as producer.
This means that the series will probably not air until sometime in 2007.

What I think would be cool is if we could get our season 2 of Doctor Who, and then during the nine months or so until season 3 airs, they could show Torchwood. Staggering the two shows so that fans don't have to wait almost a year to get their next fix of the Whoniverse.
I don't think that this could (or would) ever happen, because I am sure they are going to want the shows to air next to each other for ratings purposes, but with news of the show being delayed, I don't know, it could happen, fingers crossed. |

Well what looks like may happen now is that first series of Torchwood will lead into the 3rd or 2007 series of Doctor Who. Whereas originally, the 2006 series of Doctor Who would have lead into Torchwood.
I don't think they will overlap the two shows... so even with the delay, I think we will have Torchwood to help feed our hunger between Doctor Who series...

I'm surprised that it took this long to formally announce the delay of Torchwood. We had originally heard they would be shooting in February. It doesn't seem like much had been happening behind the scenes and John Barrowman was already commited to another project that would have kept him from being available until late March or April.

More than likely those refer to the Flash movie that is loaded from the page so that the developers could debug the page when it gets more complex in the fall.

Didn't the Doctor Who Confidential for Army of Ghosts cover Captain Jack and Torchwood and indicate they were filming? They had John Barrowman visiting the sets and everything.
That's a drag. It's bad enough I have to wait so long for my season 3 of Battlestar Galactica. |

This is old news, that seems to have been either inaccurate or superceded... filming started in April, and it is rumoured to be broadcast in the UK in the fall. (refering to the first post in this thread)

Shoot. I was already thinking this weekend, "I don't have the Doctor to watch on Sunday; what am I going to do now?" Then thought I only had three to four months to wait fo Torchwood, now I've got seven or so.... oh well.
What this does remind me of is how LONG it takes to film the episodes. Maybe I'm not thinking of this correctly, but (for example) BSG does 20(ish) episodes during a season, and they film for about nine months. The Doctor/Torchwood does about half that and takes the same amount of time. How does that work? Does this mean that the Doctor doesn't work 16 hour days, like you hear happen on U.S one-hour programs? Or is this more in the nature of how the US has a specific prime-time season that is covers and really has only recently started showing mid-season shows that are really expected to do something, and aren't just filler for shows that flopped. |

It appears that Barrowman will be joining the Doctor Who cast on or about October thru the end of 2006 if the reports ar to be believed.
The union environment in the UK and just the way the entertainment industry (especially television) works, are quite different from the US. If one reads about the production details of the classic series, there are many tales of the crew rushing to get stuff in the can before a certain hour. In the US, they would proably work until they got the shot and pay the overtime later... Other things unique to Doctor Who make filming it more complex. For one, the number of sets/locations/costumes that have to be designed from scratch for each new story. The costumes for BSG, for example, are for the most part the same from story to story and season to season. Not so in Doctor Who. Except for the Doctor and potentially his companion(s), all the other costumes are new from story to story. They were clever in the updated series of the show to reuse some elements, but for the most part, this is the case. |
