I'm not sure if this has been discussed here or not, but if so I appologize.

Let's just pretend RTD was okay with a multi-Doctor story. What would everyone's thoughts on the subject be if Paul McGann were to reprise his role for the new series?

Personally, I think it would be a great idea! I also wouldn't be opposed to a story where it is explained just a bit more that the Doctor has had other selves to the 'newer' generation of fans, even a quick glimpse in a flashback scene would be nice.

If you are agreeable to the thought, what do you feel would be the best story for that to happen?

My opinion on best would be a flash back-style with the previous doctor and the current doctor. Especially if it was the story of the time war.

It's too soon for 10 to meet 9, and if 8 is involved any companions might be too tempted to yell "screw causality-I need to warn you about the war!"

But a mult-doctor story brings up a better question of "Which actors could actually reprise the role?"

I of course would welcome it. It could be done effectively as a flashback... Since that it would avoid the multi-Doctor story which we know RTD would not welcome.

    Cheers,
    Louis

At this point, I think Paul McGann is the only one that could pull it off really... Perhaps McCoy. All the other living actors don't really look like they did during their tenure as the Doctor.

The other advantage McGann has is that we only saw him as the Doctor in his first regeneration story. Since we never saw him regenerate into the 9th Doctor, he could have aged naturally in the form of the 8th Doctor before he regenerated into the 9th... So even if McGann is now ten years older, it would still work.

    Cheers,
    Louis

Colin Baker explained the situation best in the interview with James at the Cavern recorded for one of the Aftershocks.

The way computer graphics is going etc it may be possible (eventually) to have virtual Doctors coming back! Wouldn't that be fun!

I know in the new Superman movie they have a virtual image of the superman-actor on a computer body. If this was the case they could have a 'mature' Doctor-actor with the previous face! I like to speculate about such 'possibilities'...

I had a thought after a recent episode of The Whocast...

If there's a Torchwood in the alternate universe, it implies that there's a Doctor over there, too, to initiate its establishment. So what if, to give one example, in that universe the Doctor never fell off his exercycle to turn into Sylvester McCoy? If we visit that universe again, we could run into Colin Baker as the Doctor, naturally aged because he hasn't regenerated yet...

It'll never happen, but it's fun to think about.

I agree, that would be a neat avenue to visit once, but unfortunatley that just opens up a can of worms. Now whether the can of worms are from this universe or that one, who knows?

They would have to wait until just after the next regeneration so it could be The Four Doctors.

Wow! That's an incredible idea! Big Grin

As for myself, here's a bit I wrote last year from the "Who's your fav Doctor" competition:

If I had my way, (are you listening Russell T. Davies?) I'd love to see a Four Doctors episode - A complex anniversary special maybe with McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, and David Tennent.

Age isn't really a factor for the actors here since time has been relatively good to them [and, after all, Patrick Troughton was getting on a bit if you recall 'The Two Doctors']. That and there never was a McGann/Eccelston regeneration sequence filmed.

So, if memory serves, there was a 2 doctors episode with Colin Baker and Pat Troughton... And a 3 Doctors episode with the first 3. How cool would a 4 Doctors episode be?!

The trouble with Whocast is that they keep linking the 8th Doctor with the time war and there is no evidence to support that

No, there isn't any evidence for or against it. If you take "Rose," where 9 seems to be seeing himself for the first time, then it seems reasonable to assume that 9 was not in the time war. (Of course, I'm assuming that Rose went on all the adventures we saw in the photos in Clive's place: since she had pre-knowledge of their existance, it would be easy for her not to get into the photos or into that Gaugin painting).

I am SO hoping that RTD does cover the Time War at some point -- he's hinted at it so much it would just be wrong to leave it hanging over all of us for too long..... maybe in the 4th year we'll learn about it.

I'm seriously thinking that the third season will end with a cliffhanger. The Doctor will meet another timelord or as a last scene he will land on a planet and discover it's Gallifrey, and populated.
