Then I lucked out on both counts, Darth, because "Rose" was my intro to the series as well. (Long story short: Have a friend on LiveJournal in the UK who was imploding with glee over the new series, I said "Sounds good, where in 40+ years of history do I start?" and she said "Rose, definitely" and here I am.) I've become a pretty hardcore fan in two years.
And actually, I have to say that the BFA addiction is your fault. It was your review of "No More Lies" that made me go from "I've been meaning to check that series out" to "need to hear it now." So thanks for that. I always love it when pages from your Diaries are on Podshock.
As for Charley, I think what bugged me about her was how she was so smug straight of the gate. Rose, and Lucie too, had a good couple stories' worth of "WTF? I'm on another world? And these are aliens?" before they really settled into the groove of being the Doctor's companion. Charley started strutting through "Sword of Orion", all "just think of us as the ones who are going to get you out alive," like it was no big deal to her. Shuddup, Charley.
I do hope she grows on me, though, and I'm doing my best to keep an open mind about her. |

Sword of Orion was a rewrite of a fan audio from the late '80s and Charlie inherited some dialog which may not have been entirely suited to her character. I would not use Sword of Orion as a good example of the character's behavior. Charlie is just too comfortable with unfamiliar events in this one. Oh, and I forgot all the other stuff I said about this story in my review back in Podshock #27... though I could review my notes, if I wasn't soooo lazy.

| Heh! Yay! Glad to have played a part in your corruption.
On Charley, though, the way I've always taken her smugness as somewhat natural because she's rather from the "creme" of early 20th century society. She's a "colonial brat", I think, so it makes some sense she behaves nonchalantly in a number of different situations that would've given Victoria fits. I think she adapts so quickly to life with the Doctor because she's a progressive, well-travelled colonial brat. Whether she was seeing Singapore or Skaro, it's all pretty much a part of her "gap-year-before-gap-years-were-possible-for-most-people". I think, too, her realization that she's not meant to be alive kinda makes her behave more recklessly than she probably would've otherwise. Well, of course, "otherwise" she'd be dead...but you know what I mean. |

Taras, you just saved Charley for me. Thank you. That makes a ton of sense. Yesterday's drive to/from work featured most of "Stones of Venice," and I like her much better now. I just hopped on the Podshock bandwagon last September when I got my iPod, so I may have to go back and find the episode with your review.

That also makes some sense. I must have misunderstood, then, because she didn't strike me as well-travelled. She struck me as more "I WANT to be well-travelled, but I haven't really done any travelling yet, and I'm starting with Singapore."
All that said, do we know yet if they're planning on another season of Lucie Miller? Because she and the Doctor are so well-matched. I'd love to see/hear more from them. |

I haven't heard anything definate, but I believe these stories were a success, and it would really depend on the availability of the actors.
I did read that there will be another McGann release in the main monthly range; I believe in October, or thereabouts. This one will continue the Charley and C'rizz story.
