As for the RT cover... now I wish I had seen it! I had been avoiding it all week.

I wouldn't have thought that was particularly hard in the States, Louis?

Good point Tarashnat, I truly didn't think of that!

I actually caught it (purely by chance) on the counter of the newsagents the morning after I heard there was a big fat spoiler on the front cover, and just assumed Louis was being careful how he picked up his papers in the morning!!

You are right for an average bloke in the US. But for someone that does a Doctor Who podcast, web site, and monitor DW related news all over the net... it is gets a bit difficult when you have your proverbial finger on the pulse of Doctor Who to avoid something. Wink

    Cheers,

Just finished watching the episode. I don't have time to read through the thread yet, I want to go to bed. But I did want to jot a few thoughts down. I'll font it white in case anyone who hasn't seen the ep is skimming through the thread.

p.s. Is that Radio Times cover image available to see online anywhere?

Spoiler start => Overall, I enjoyed it. I liked the little bits of foreshadowing throughout the episode...e.g. Tallulah: "I know all men are pigs" and "You put the devil in me". They managed to give the Empire State building a hint of a Dalek look to it. I especially liked when they showed it with two spot lights on top about where the Dalek voice-lamps are. I didn't much enjoy the pig-men, that seemed kind of pointless. During the teaser, for a half-second I thought Lazlow was going to be jumped by an Ogron. The Cult of Skarro seems to be a sort of Dalek thinktank or something, to "think outside the case". I'm not sure they came up with the best idea. Why get rid of their armor plating and heavy weaponry? Especially now when they aren't stymied by stairs anymore. <= Spoiler End.

I'm going "Full Circle" and putting my avatar back to what it was when I first joined. :)

Edit: Hmm, actually now the link's not coming up there for me - anyway, you'll find it in Outpost Gallifrey's news items for April 16.

Lucas, I fixed your link to post to the OG news item. People can click thru to the cover if they wish. I think OG may prevent hot linking the photos.

    Random, disconnected impressions:

I, for one, was grateful for the American accents (poorly-done or not) because it meant I didn't spend the episode cursing the lack of subtitles. Big Grin Seriously, the BBC need never worry that I won't buy the DVDs just because the program is available online. For one thing, I'm a "making-of" slut: I live for commentary tracks, extras, featurettes, etc. that round out DVDs. But primarily, I rely on captions and/or subtitles. I don't really have a hearing problem, per se, but I've always found it much easier to understand speech if I can see the person talking. Between the quick, witty writing, the sometimes rapid-fire line delivery, and the unfamiliar accents, I can easily miss a third of what's going on. (And it's usually the good third, dang it!)

The Martha-on-stage scene bothered me, too, but it can be explained away (and it has), I suppose.

I guess I'm the wimp in this group. The humlek? dalman? hybrid guy evoked a loud, cat-scaring "EEEUWWW!!" from me, even though I couldn't resist checking out the Radio Times cover beforehand. Oogy. Just plain oogy. [shiver] But it seemed to me that the Daleks had already been doing a fair amount of evolving already, if you compare the innards of the Dalek in season one's "Dalek" and Sec. Sec was much bigger and more tentacle-y, I thought. Or is that a characteristic of the think-tank Daleks in general?

I was really intrigued by the Hooverville in Central Park. My American history classes mentioned Hoovervilles in generic terms, springing up around the country, but I never knew there was a large one right in the middle of Manhattan. Wow. It makes me realize how lucky my grandfather was to have had and kept a job in NYC during the Depression. (And helps me understand my mother's unwillingness to throw things out because "you never know when you might need it.")

Nit-picky question about the scenes from part two: where do the homeless guys get guns from? Wouldn't they have long since pawned anything as valuable as that? Just askin'.

    CI,
fidgeting impatiently as she waits for part two...

Hey New Yorkers: are there still leaves on the trees on the 1st of November? They're at least autumnal colors in the episode, but I don't remember leaves on the trees that late when I used to live on the east coast.

Heh, there are a ton of anachronisms in this episode. I'm a little more intrigued by the fact that the interior, signature elevators are apparently complete, when there were main floors still being added until the middle of November 1930. Also, the mast wouldn't have been there in any form on 1 November. It wasn't put on in real life until March 1931. Indeed, there wouldn't have even been a roof on 1 November. Also, the Central Park Hooverville didn't come into being until 1931, and there are records of police "amiably" arresting vagrants in the park as late as the spring of 1931. Since these facts would've been easily available to Raynor, and she seems, according to the Confidential to have done a bit of historical research, I tend to think it's an intentional variation with the historical facts. In other words, I think she's saying that the Daleks have accelerated the natural progress of history since their apparently-recent ("the new masters") arrival. I tend to look on that hero shot of the ESB from Liberty Island as foreshadowing of there being something slightly "off" about New York. (Though it might actually be a genuine error, cause I'm not sure you'd get that view of the ESB from that part of Liberty Island.)

Raynor didn't have to give us a precise date, so I think the fact that she did means something.

Yes, the city stays warmer longer than the regions further inland. When the Catskills are at peak color, the city's trees are just beginning to change color.

And the B-25 bomber plane crash into the 79th floor of the building in 1945 was no accident... it was actually Captain Jack's attempt at destroying the remaining Daleks that bunkered down in the building... Err.. never mind, I was just daydreaming.

A pity then Dr Who isn't made in high definition - as when Blu-Ray is fully realized one it's neat tricks - is in allowing two video streams - giving 'picture-in-picture' (and possibly on HD-DVD too) meaning that the commentary track will be able to have a 'talking head.'

I think that may be the 'cosmic strike' - I take it to mean there was a massive Solar flare at that time. The other dates she 'tweaked' a bit or as has been mentioned - the Daleks got the job further advanced.
