Rumors of Simm's casting as the Master first materialized months ago. If Romana had been cast, you'd think we'd have heard something.

I've gotta say, it would have been brilliant if the BBC had purposely let slip that the Master would be appearing in this years series so that we only focused on that and then BAM oh here's Romana! Actually I too and holding out for The Rani.

Of course, since when has the Beeb been brilliant lately?

Damn I just had the thought she might be the Rani but I see you've beaten me to it.

A little off subject but this just occurred to me. King Harold II was the last Anglo-Saxon king of England. And it seems that Harold Saxon wants to be the last Prime Minister of England. Interesting correlation.

Surely this has been mentioned somewhere before.

Perhaps the Master is going to end up with an arrow in his eye. Maybe that's what Martha and the Doctor were off to do at the end of 'Blink".

Heh, that's kinda funny to think about. And it would keep us thinking non-linearly.

BTW, just for a little fun, here's Simm's Master with Delgado's beard.

The Rani is another rogue TimeLord - a female one.

'The Mark of the Rani' - with the Sixth Doctor

and 'Time and the Rami' with the Seventh Doctor

And from what we know of her personality and grand schemes, she would not be hanging around the Master. She would hatch her own scheme that would put all that material (%10 of the population) to work, not just waste it. I am not sure what Lucy is, but unless the Rani has had a lobotomy it is not her.

    Cheers,

Lucy is to the Master as Martha (insert any other companion name) is to the Doctor.

One thing that RTD and crew have done with the Master is make him the Doctor's equal on many levels. He has "companions" or a better term would be minions. First we have Chanto, and now Lucy (and Chang Lee from the TV movie before them). How the Master treats his associates as opposed to the way the Doctor treats his will be a differentiating point for the two characters. This and their relative greed/avarice. They are equals on many other levels, genius, toys, humor, 'alien'-ness, etc.

I'm with you. I don't think there's any way that Lucy is the Rani...or Romana for that matter.

That's why it's not the Rani. She's got a limited caché with the general public. If she were to be revealed as the Rani in the last episode of the Series, the UK would scratch their heads and say, "So what?"

Romana's a facetious hope on that score, too, frankly—but at least there'd be a glimmer of recognition. Especially if the whole story ended with the line, "Jack, Martha, may I present my wife, Romana." Even better, perhaps, would be the reveal that Lucy is (somehow) Susan.

I think Chantho may be more likely from within the scope of this three-part story, in that we didn't necessarily see her die, and the Lazarus Project would theoretically have given Saxon the power to alter her genetically into a human. Still don't know how impactful a reveal that would be from a season-long standpoint, though.

Whatever the case ends up being, though, the secret behind Lucy Saxon is the thing I'm most interested in seeing on Saturday.

What do new series only fans think about this Master storyline?

I'm asking because I am a longtime fan and I love what they are doing with him with all of the nods back to the classic series, but my girlfriend is a new series only fan (she has no interest in watching any of the classic episode stories) and she is completely bored with these Master stories and couldn't care less about what happens.

Do any new series only fans feel the same?

    Thanks.

I'm curious to know if your girlfriend has watched the 2005 programme faithfully from "Rose", or if she's just caught the episodes as and when she could. These last three episodes are surely fanwankish, by comparison with the 39 or so episodes that have preceded it. However, I'd also tend to think that they don't require reference to the original series, so much as paying reasonably close attention to the current series.

I heard an interesting point made on Whocast #50, from someone who sounded to be in a similar boat with your girlfriend, that what she was enjoying about the episodes wasn't the Master, but Captain Jack. Paul and Seb seemed to agree, noting that on their forums people who were NS fans were concentrating on the Jack/Doctor/Martha story, whereas OS fanboys were seeing the Master/Doctor relationship as the more compelling element. Dunno how statistically valid any of these anecdotal observations really are, but they feel right enough.

It may just be that your gf doesn't like the Master or Captain Jack that much—in which case, she probably wouldn't find that much to like in these episodes.
