Apologies if this is a duplicate topic, but I have not been on the forums for a wee while!
I'm raising this as my wife says that she can't stand Martha Jones as a companion. She says her whingy personality is annoying her.
I'm less critical of her, but I certainly don't have the same warmth for her as I did Rose.
Sometimes the whole 'I wish notice me' thing seems a bit contrived. After only knowing him for a few minutes she seemed to want him to propose to her or something! At least with Rose the relationship between them had more depth and built up. I feel that the producers are trying to capture a romantic interest and the angst involved with Martha, but it seemed too early to do it.
It also makes her seem unnecessarily cold, like when captain Jack mentioned Rose and she uttered some whiny put down.
I do like her, I just don't think she's Ace (see what I did there? Regular genius me!).
The Jury's out with me on this one. |

| I like her, but I don't feel as though she was used as well as she could've been. Granted it's only her first series (possible spoiler white text and last if you believe the rumors), and she's still learning about what it's like to travel with The Doctor, but I don't think the chemistry is all there. It's clear that she wants him in a more-than-friendly way, and early on it seemed that he felt the same, but it's also clear that he isn't over Rose, and probably won't be for some while, so don't even bother with any romantic plots. Personally I hope she sticks around for another year and they can showcase her intelligence, rather than just make her another silly little girl with a crush. It's rare in Whoville that we get a smarter-than-average companion. |

The reason she may seem whiny (or whingy) is because she stepped into a known role. I don't mean the actress.
Martha stepped into the role of traveling companion to a guy, and she knows a little bit about his history, or just enough to know that the last woman he had with him he was in love with.
It's natural for her to assume she's the rebound girl, and while mostly she'd not like that idea, the fact that she is IN that position and he has shown absolutely no sign of falling for her probably rankles her a bit, and therefore her attitude of "Oh sad me, he doesn't like me."
Then as she got to know him more, that feeling that he SHOULD fall for her increased until now she's probably wondering if there's something wrong with her, why isn't he falling for her.
She probably just doesn't see that his love for Rose was so strong it's not likely to be replaced as easily as all that.
To me she hasn't been the slight bit "whingy" and has been a strong character, a fun character, and a good character. I can't wait to see more of her.
And I hope the rumors aren't true!

Although most Doctor Who fans (at least in the UK) would've probably reeled back in horror when it broke that that annoying, drunken, chavette had been appointed as the Doctor's companion, she proved everyone wrong. Billie Piper was simply massive for the show. The program captured the nation's imagination in a big way & a lot of that was down to her. She became the very symbol of the modern Doctor Who, at least as much as Christopher Eccleston himself.
All that said, I still prefer Martha (and the words Freema Agyeman have never clogged up Ebay Dr Who searches with pages & pages of really crap CDs) |

I don't like Martha. I did at first but now I find her just acting stupid.
Rose caused trouble trying to act like the Doctor without the full understanding of time lines and altering history.
(Many examples left out)
Martha seems to be causing trouble just by bragging about who the Doctor is. In the FoB, they find out who the Doctor is, by over hearing her. In Utopia, when the Doctor and Jack are talking, she is bragging about the Tardis and all, then makes a big deal about the watch.
Just seems careless, and annoying to me. |

I think we need to give Martha more of a chance. She's only had the one season and I seem to remember the forums on Outpost Gallifrey being afire with "get rid of Rose" threads not so long ago (well into the second season). Now she's gone, you'd think everyone had universally loved her.
It will be the same with Martha. The next companion will come along and everyone will be saying "he/she's not a patch on Martha". |

For the record I was not a fan of Rose.
I think Martha a foolish to the point of being annoying.

Ditto to this comment. Martha is a much better companion, IMHO one along the lines of Sarah Jane. I was, and still remain, one of those who practically shouted Get Rid of Rose and All This Love Crap. I still contend that the only way the Doctor could love a member of the human race is only in a fatherly way, being that he is a from an advanced civilization, has a completely different biology (we don't even know how Gallifreyans reproduce,) and had a life span of potentially 1000 times than that of a human. |

Absolutely, now is still too early to come to a complete decision about her. I just hope that in later episodes there is more depth to her rather than than the current lovelorn whiner persona she seems to have.
DAVEAC - I'm with you! Sally Sparrow would certainly make a great companion in my eyes ( ). Her Welsh boyfriend was pretty funny, he could tag along. |
