Asmuch as I really love Martha - she has a great composure to her and I think the Doctor fires off her well - I prefer him when he's not being all soppy I am utterly in the bring back Sally camp. I thought her creation (much like Moffat's creation of Jack) was inspired, and loved the portrayal of her in Blink.
And by the way...

Billie Piper as the Doctor's companion is one of those ideas that sounds terrible on paper but turns out to be very good. And Rose was a good companion. But Martha is just better.
It seems to me that Billie was chosen specifically for her chemistry with Christopher Eccleston. I don't think she had the same chemistry with David Tennant. Freema, on the other hand, was likely chosen for her chemistry with David. On the flip side, I don't think Martha would be a good match for the Ninth Doctor.
Important issues of chemistry aside, I see Martha as a better, more likable character, but for now she still seems to be in Rose's shadow. And it can't be easily stepped out of. |

Wasn't he? Ah I think I might have thought that - I was talking about a Welsh actor and it must have short circuited my brain !
DAVEAC - that's the first I've seen of your animated GIF - nice one! Almost had me thinking it was a regeneration! |

[Quote by: Dangermouse] Absolutely, now is still too early to come to a complete decision about her. I just hope that in later episodes there is more depth to her rather than than the current lovelorn whiner persona she seems to have.

Nightingale was Welsh? I thought he was from "the North." But perhaps not as far North as Eccleston's Doctor |

| Martha is above and beyond what Rose was as a companion. The only thing Rose has going for her was that sexy white trash look, which most men will notice and want to experience. Martha is well educated, but still a bit young and immature. And remember, the Doctor did kiss her in 'Smith and Jones', so there was some provocation to make Martha interested in him. I haven't seen Martha as whiny at all, as a matter of fact, she seems quite confident in herself and what she does. But it is her immaturity in combination with her confidence in herself that makes her leap before looking. But her character is growing and maturing and I am certain will evolve in time. |

Another reason I think Martha beasts Rose is that she doesn't bring as much in the way of family, or ties to present-day Earth. While Martha joins the TARDIS (at least in part) to escape from family drama, Rose was more interested in bringing her family drama into the TARDIS (sometimes, quite literally).
Consequently, while I found myself thinking, "oh, jeez, ANOTHER episode with Jackie," instead I look forward to appearances by Martha's family. This isn't because her family is more likable than Jackie and Mickey were. It's because we only get to see them every so often. |

| Yeah the soapy aspect sometimes seemed to eclipse the rest of the show when Rose was in it, but it DID help the show appeal to a wider audience. I'm not a fan of Martha's family so far, well - her mother anyway. She seems pretentious and has that air of superiority about her. I think her eyebrows may be another life form. |

I'm not a big fan of Rose or Martha. My favorite companion in the new series is Captain Jack. This is primarily due to the fact that Jack brings a whole new dimension to the role of companion, being that he is someone who is quite knowledgable about time travel and alien technology.
I think a female companion with a significant understanding of such things, like a Romana or Nyssa for example, would be perfect. I hear Kylie Minogue has expressed an interest in becoming involved with the series. How about it? |

Martha's okay, but seems to spend most of time looking dazed and confused. Sarah Jane she ain't.
Sally Sparrow has enough paranormal and timetravel experience for the next series of Torchwood methinks. |

Isn't it great how other peoples posts just fire off ideas in your head!
Reading your post Doctor Whoovie - straight away - I thought they must (if the actress is available) have Sally Sparrow in Dr Who, or if not that Torchwood - or even Sarah Jane Smith and Sally Sparrow Investigations!
Get that girl back!
