Gap Year (News story from BBC) (Spoiler alert) Views: 657

Ok so I have said in the title its a spoiler alert so there will be NO white text here.

The BBC and Outpost Gallifrey now are reporting that 2009 will be a gap year. There will be 3 specials instead with David Tennant in the role. Series 5 runs in 2010.

Now I am upset there is no full series for 2009, but with Tennant being on stage whilst Series 5 would have been filmed for a 2009 showing, this to me shows that Tennant could well do Series 5. And that he has taken the opportunity for the plays whilst its on its Hiatus or Gap Year.

I must say that this is probably the most interesting piece of news in the past few months.

It does make me wonder though if the Doctor Who team will really be taking a partial-hiatus or if they have something else up their sleeve. If they're taking suggestions, I'd say it's time to call up Paul McGann and Sheridan Smith.

Just one point about your 'spoiler alert' point - people don't see the words (Spoiler alert) in the thread title at left side of the page - they don't see it until they are on this page.

A better thread title would have been 'Gap Year (Spoiler alert) (News story from BBC)

But I agree with your point about David - the only reason I can think of having a Gap year IS to keep David onboard - or maybe its to keep RTD on.

Overwise they could switch to an 11th Doctor (?) under ?S Moffet?

    Cheers, daveac

I completely agree that the main reason for the hiatus is to placate David and RTD. I'm sure the BBC would like to hold on to them for as long as possible.

Still, I wouldn't be surprised if these 3 specials were to mark the exit of both men. The added time off would allow the production team more time to get use to their new replacements.

I just read the 2010 thread and now this one, and I'm going back and forth on it. I don't like the idea of a year going by without any new Who (notwithstanding the three specials), but I also don't want them to burn through these last few regenerations all in a five year period. I guess I don't mind if they take the time off, let DT work on other stuff so we can have the 10th Doctor around for a little while longer.

I'm going "Full Circle" and putting my avatar back to what it was when I first joined. :)

the gap year of 2009, I think may have the problem of holding on to certain demographics of the audience-mainly kids. I'm not saying children won't tune in for 2010, but I can't imagine that some other network wouldn't try to introduce something else that would dominate the market for that year off...just a thought...

    Might give Primeval a boost.

...or, it could make it a case of absence makes the heart grow fonder for the kids. Heck, it could even turn them into obsessive fans (which MAY describe some of us here.... )
