Actually, it was at stake, it is just that the Doctor and Donna got to them before they could get the pill out to most of humanity, so, yes the entire fate of humanity was at stake. It was just that the threat was defused before it escalated too far. |

Nah - I thought there were too many indicators that the intention of the Adipose thing was not to kill humanity. Let's see, when the first woman was killed it was - "the adipose has been witnessed, activate full pathenogenisis" (so she was only killed to keep it under wraps) then - "in a crisis they can convert bone/hair etc..." "you might as well have a scoop cos you'll never see it printed" (i.e. it's all meant to be on the down low, how are they gonna do that when people start dying/disappearing on a massive scale?) "We had planned to seed millions... but the first 1 million will have to do." Seed millions, not necessarily kill millions. Clearly she didn't mind casualties and was willing to kill a million people off to get more Adipose because the jig was up - it was a hideous plan but not the same as a Dalek invasion or a rip in time that destroys everything, or well, pretty much list any of the episodes in the past 3 series.
Anyway, look at The Doctor's reaction. "Seeding a level five planet is against the law" I'm willing to put money on it that if the whole planet was at stake he would have screaming something like "You can't turn all humans into Marshmallows!" and been a bit more frantic. |

Too true. The world was certainly not at stake. Really, if only 1 in 1,000,000 people died from a diet pill that would still be a viable product in todays world. As long as it was a mutual benefit to all involved it was quite an acceptable arangement IMHO. |

I've just watched the Confidential and it was really good.
I totally agree with what RTD and Phil Collinson said about Bernard Cribbins' scene at the end; it was a lovely moment. Rather than be envious/jealous at what he'd not got the chance to do, he did a litle dance for Donna. Nice. |

[Quote by: Magpie] And Mad4plaid - Have there been rumors that the Rose coming back is an evil-Rose alter-ego or alien in disguise trying to trap the Doctor? OoOoooooo!!!!

Sorry - don't want to start any rumors. This is COMPLETELY WISHFUL THINKING on my side. I was never a fan of Rose, and at this point, I'm quite put out they are bringing her back. So, by hoping she's evil incarnate, I'm trying to make it acceptable in my mind. |

Yes but rather let down by the dogy special effect of Donna and the Doctor being superimposed on the open TARDIS door. Hard to put my finger on it but it looked cr@p.
And the Doctor didn't say "your Grandad looks like Tom Cambell".

Well, the scene was filmed on the TARDIS set, the only special effect was the star field around the TARDIS (see the Confidential). That is how the console looks when looking in from the outside door side of the TARDIS set. So the actors were not superimposed into the shot, the shot was superimposed on a star field.
The view of Venus was done by someone who has never looked through one of the cheap telescopes they used in the scene. You will not see a star field in the same field of view as Venus in the eyepiece because Venus is so bright that your eye won't register the fainter stars. You may catch a glimpse of one or two bright stars, but not the rich details they showed on screen. This is the same reason we can not see too many stars from the hearths of our light polluted cities... |

Actually, if you watch the confidential closely they are only filmed against the TARDIS doors and door frame - the rest of the TARDIS exterior is added digitally, then it is put in the star field. It seems to me that the inserted door image doesn't gel properly with the digital created TARDIS parts.
With regards to Venus, I had a much larger aperture, Newtonian telescope than Gramps but have never seen it with as much detail as he seemed to get! Always looking through a lot of atmosphere. |

Is Donna's granddad wearing a tiny UNIT pin on his red cap? It's really hard to make out clearly, but it seems to have the same basic shape as the UNIT logo.
Oh, and you know what I really like about his character? He seems like he could be an homage to Maxwell Edison from the 5th and 8th Doctor DWM comic strips. Given RTD's professed love of the strip, and the way he's pinched so many freakin' ideas from them, I wouldn't rule out deliberate theft in this case. |

| Heh, I just noticed that the emergency lights on the Adipose Industries van are mauve. Nice bit of subtle continuity with "The Empty Child" on the part of the design team. The universal color for danger, indeed. |

Confidential is always fun to watch. It often confirms things I think I saw in the episode.
Like when Foster stood over the crowd and did her Eva Peron stance, hands up, palms inward. I recognized that in the episode.
Then it was a delight to see it actually in the script on the page in Confidential, and referred to later.
But what about the line "I had to travel a long way to find obesity on this scale..."
Had she never gone to Raxicoricofallipatorius? She's just not trying, is she?
Sean.

I wonder if the Doctor will recognise Bernard Cribbins from his adventures during the Dalek Invasion of Earth? He is a lot older now. Perhaps he told Donna all about it, or perhaps he's keeping it to himself?
Looking forward to some links with Bernard's history with the Doctor, perhaps when the Daleks show up? |

Well, I went back and looked. I have no idea what the "clue" is supposed to be, but it's there:
A sticker on both the front and back with a sort of triangle logo and the letters "MOS"
I liked the episode. I like how they've toned town Tate, I liked the return of Cribbins, I even got a kick out of the little fat creatures.
My wife and I's first reaction to the ship was "Close Encounters" as well. That, imo, does NOT bode well for future RTD episodes, as LotTL was complete overkill imo.
And, as I've said before, I could do without one appearance in this episode, and for the rest of the season. |
