I'd love to see the Doctor end up in the middle of the English Civil War.

He did but I can't remember the name of it. My sister had the hardcover book version of it. I'm pretty sure they went back to visit Tegan's grandfather but the English village he's from somehow got on a time mix-up and while they were doing English CivilWar reinactment and Tegan was going to be Queen of the May (and be killed!) and some other stuff was happening including a big stone face... oh nevermind, I can't remember exactly Smile I'm probably getting it all mixed up.

You're absolutely right, I'd forgotten all about The Awakening. It wasn't however a proper historical but more like a psuedo-historical set in the present day if that makes sense.

Tonights episode could have worked equally well as a pure historical. The human drama of something which actually happened!Wow!

I play RPG paper and pencils games. We played a game called DC Heroes 3rd Ed once. I was the GM (Game Master) and the story I came up with was a historical event. Our party of Heroes were transported back in time to the morning of April 14th 1865 in Washington DC. The Heroes have to find that an alien force is behind the Assassination of Abe Lincon. The aliens are using John Wilkes Booth to see that their plan is fulfilled.

I think that would be a good story for Doctor Who. After the events in the Pompeii episode Lincon would still have to die because it a fixed point in time.(Lincon died in our game to)

After all that talk I want to play DC Heroes and I think I am. Have a good day.

I've just finished listening to the Big Finish 8th Doctor audio: Other Lives and really enjoyed it. The reviews on Amazon are not that positive but luckily I chose to ignore these and make up my own mind.
It is a fantastic historical set at the time of the Great Exhibition. It relies on no science fiction elements except for those traits owned by the existing characters of the Doctor, Charlie and K'rizz. Instead it exdploits the tensions, historical events and prejudices of the time to create a story in which I felt that all three main characters were served well. It was funny and yet at times exceptionally dark.
Yet another example of why the new series should try a few pure historicals when it returns. Are you listening Mr. Toffee?
