Sorry, Linquel, I believe I'm referring to "Remembrance of the Daleks" with Sylvester McCoy. He deals with UNIT as Daleks invade 1960s London.
Although I'm now looking through Wikipedia on the episode, and UNIT is not actually mentioned there, and it's been a while since I saw it.
Still, the military folks he deals with certainly resemble UNIT...
Sean.

I need to try watching the McCoy eps. I once tried to watch Silver Nemesis and couldn't get into it. I think I tried Ghost Light, too, with the same result. I've only actually seen a handful of Colin Baker eps, too. |

| Nope, not UNIT. Just British Army. Possibly a special section, but they haven't, at least insofar as the script makes explicit, gone out looking for aliens. Still, the nature of the organization isn't spelled out in any great detail. so you can believe what you like, I guess. Basically, It's UNIT-esque, at best. UNIT Light, perhaps.
It's just a part of the regular British Armed Forces responding to/getting ambushed by a specific problem. |

Anyone take note of the UNIT soldier that's escorting The Doctor?
Jenkins! I wonder if anyone will tell him, "Chap with wings there five rounds rapid."

As with most 2 parters, it's probably not fair to judge things before seeing how they conclude. But let's try anyways:
- Agree with another poster that I may have pre-judged the story when I saw Helen Raynor's name in the credits. Dalek 2 parter from last year was atrocious, so I think I prepared myself for the worst. Ever since we got the introduction of the Man-lek, I'm eagerly awaiting the Sontaran/Human hybrid --- maybe the SontarMan???
- I was also immediately thinking why not break the window to save Gramps at the end? And also when The Doctor and UNIT officer were trapped in the ATMOS-fied UNIT vehicle - the guy's a UNIT officer and probably has a gun...just blow out the windows and jump! Alright...being a military vehicle maybe they're bullet-proof windows, so I'll cut them some slack here...
- Agree with a previous poster that this was probably the best Sontaran story yet...although that's not saying a lot, as we've only got 4 previous encounters (by my count - not including books, BF, etc...).
- Why oh why do these alien species that want to conquer Earth (assuming that's the Sontaran's plans) feel the need to do so from within? I think this whole ATMOS-in-the-car thing is lame, given that we've already seen aliens modify and use human technology against itself several times in the new series: Cybermen/bluetooth earpieces, The Wire/TV, and you could even argue Daleks/Satellite-5. Whatever happened to good old-fashioned brute force? Send a small force to Earth to disable the Torchwood weapons (seen in TCI), then just bombard the Earth with their weapons...
- Would be nice to see the Brigadier, so I've got my fingers crossed he'll appear in part 2 (but I'm not holding my breath)
- Donna continues to impress me. I really like this mutual non-attraction factor which contrasts with Rose and Martha, which took away from their characters. But I can't stand how their families are dragged into the mix. Leave her mum and Gramps out of it! Donna's doing fine on her own, without having new (albeit older) versions of Jackie and Mickey.
- One final thing - maybe I haven't read the thread in detail yet, or maybe my ears were deceiving me, but did anyone else pick up something Martha said? After she introduces The Doctor and Martha to the Colonel in the black trailer, and proceeds to give him a tour, she said something to the effect of, "Come on Doctor, you've been aboard the Valeyard." I'm assuming this was the name of the mobile base trailer. Was it The Valeyard, or maybe The Valiant. Can't quite make it out clearly... |

It's the Captain Scarlet Cloud base from 'Last of the Time Lords' that the Master had UNIT build. |

Callbacks to past Sontaran eps directly and indirectly.
Donna's first saying Sontaran was going to be the original pronunciation but actor Kevin Lindsay as Linx from The Time Warrior said as it is now heard and the rest is history.
Staal makes reference to "the female's weak thorax" another callback to TTW.
Donna's mum and grandad recalling where they'd seen The Doctor before. Nice comic moment.
Donna gets better and better with each story.

Okay that wasn't Staal!
A Sontaran Potato Head toy will rule the school!
Hey if they can make one of Darth Vader our mates across the pond can whip one up of "The greatest warriors in the galaxy" - The Doctor.
Oh would it hurt for The Doctor to be wrong about something once in a while.

Well, if you follow the NHL, there are two Staals: Jordan and his brother Eric, though there are more Staal brothers in Ontario, so expect there to be an influx of Staals to come! |

Three: Marc Staal is playing for the Rangers against his brother Jordan, who plays for Pittsburgh, in the second round of the playoffs. Eric's summer vacation came early, as Carolina missed the play-offs by a slim margin. |

Hopefully not echoing too much as said above (didn't have time to read through entire thread)... I loved this episode overall: then again I'm incredibly partial to the Sontarans, and I thought they were beautifully realized this time around. Didn't mind the significant height loss. In fact, it seemed to fit the Sontaran profile: a race of Napoleon-like clones SHOULD be short, and therefore behave like they're always overcompensating... brilliant!
Great to see an evolved Martha back... though Catherine Tate's been doing fine on her own (I was never a neysayer... I actually find her show funny).
Looking forward to next week...

The events in 'Remembrance of The Daleks' take place in 1963, several years before the events of 'The Web of Fear'. It is was the Yeti invasion in 'The Web of Fear' that led to the formation of UNIT. And I think that Simon Williams played and RAF Group Captain in this story, rather than an Army officer.
Sylvester McCoys' UNIT story was 'Battlefield'. Neither Peter Davison nor Colin Baker had any true UNIT stories, although The Doctors UNIT connections did help him in 'Time-Flight' and the 5th Doctor did meet the Brig in 'Mawdryn Undead'.
I do recall The 3rd Doctor getting into arguements with The Brigadier over what methods to use to resolve a problem, but I don't recall either of them being very rude. But I might be mistaken. |

In most countries, it is the air force that tends to deal with UFO investigations. |
