We all know the "Real" reason why UNIT are now UnIT
United Nations Intelegance Taskforce
Unified Intelegence Taskforce
but what can we come up with in the Whoniverse to explain it away.
theory 1)
a side effect of the Time War. Small changes in reality caused by changes in causaility
theory 2)
This isnt actually the UNIT we know. the Doctor is in one of a multitude of universes.. ie i was with them in the 70's or was it the 80's (I know this is because ogf Maudrin Undead but thats ok too)
Like a Petes World Torchwood.. this is a Not Petes World Unit...
just thought it may be intresting to talk about
i could be v wrong |

Personally, I don't understand the whole UNIT v. UnIT thing. It is my understanding that the United Nations somehow made the BBC change the name. How can they make the BBC do anything? If I wanted to make a movie or TV show that had the U.S. Army in it, how can anyone say I can't call them the U.S. Army. How many fictional movies or TV shows are about real Police Departments?
In my universe, UNIT is still UNIT.

True, but if you read the end credits of shows such as Law & Order, or even the old Hill Street Blues, they say things like "consideration given/paid to [insert organization here]." At least in the States.
Perhaps the BBC didn't want to pay the UN anything... maybe the UN cannot accept payment? Don't know... |

Well, if indeed it really is "Unified Intelligence Taskforce" then they need to change their acronym to UIT
They are still making references to United Nations though... I believe a recent Torchwood episode (the one where Martha crosses over to it), Jack associates UNIT with the United Nations, although he doesn't actually say United Nations Intelligence Task Force.
Cheers,

Is the situation with the UN like how you can't mention brand name products on the BBC. Perhaps the UN can't be seen endorsing a TV show.
Or maybe its too close to home... Maybe there is a real UNIT headquartered in Geneva or the basement of the NYC headquarters past where you get those personalized UN stamps in the basement. |

| Be great to see the UNIT characters as recurring characters rather than the companion's family for a change. Now that Martha's involved should be easy to write stories in which the Doctor is pulled back into helping them occasionally (but I do mean occasionally) |

Maybe they just didn't want to confuse anybody that perhaps there actually is a UNIT that fights aliens! |
