Good or bad, I must say this episode has sparked a veritable whopper of a thread.

Here are a few ideas for future thread names:

    The Popular Mechanics of Regeneration

Should all Gallifreyans be called Time Lords? (answer: accept any answer that doesn't necessitate you having to listen to all three CDs of Zagreus)

    A Pistol Packin' Doctor

Appropriate dress codes for Replicants and Clones.

The Hath and Jane HATHaway. Coincidence? I think not!

[Quote  by:  DarthSkeptical]Just to re-iterate what Taras said, they're not clones. They're replicants. Quite possible for there to be a man who looks 50, but actually to have been generated a few hours before.

yes, yes, "clone" was the wrong word Big Grin . But how is "replicant" any different? Doesn't that just mean a copy of something/someone, and isn't that what a clone is? a copy?

Still, if these replicant's age so quickly I guess I would have just liked that explained in the show, it just seemd very strange to have this HUGE age gap between the soldiers and the general with no stated reason.
Yeah, it is admittedly difficult coming up with a precise word for what these guys are. They aren't clones in any common sense use of that term for reasons Taras has already given. They aren't quite Cylons as seen in the new Battlestar Galactica. Although they're pretty close to Cylons, the BSG technology is seemingly inferior to what we see here in that the 12 (or, as it stands now, 11) known models all look precisely alike. The guys in "Daughter" may have a good deal of genetic similarity, but they are ostensibly assembled in different ways, based on (but not duplicating) the parental DNA. The closest analogy I can think of in other science fiction is therefore "replicant", as popularized in Blade Runner.

As for the utility of creating an "older" replicant, well, it makes sense to me. You need someone who is visibly "different" to occupy the leadership role. An easy way to accomplish this is just to give them white hair and wrinkles. This distinction could have been achieved any number of ways. I personally think it'd have been cooler if all the soldiers except for the leader had been female. Of course, that might have given the Jenny-seduces-her-jailor scene more of a Torchwood vibe, and Donna's excellent "feminine wiles" comment would've doubtless been cut. But making the leader appear older still explains how all these people, who are only a matter of hours or minutes old, instinctively know who their boss is.

Ahh, now look and see who's gone and mentioned my two most favorite mediums of Sci-Fi. Neither have these gaping plot holes that we discuss, and I actually watched Blade Runner the night before Doctor's Daughter and i was thinking 'If the Colonel doesn't shoot her, then they're going to find some 'lifespan' excuse for her not to join the TARDIS, another link back to my JENNY DOOMED theory!

This has been a great thread.. I've got one more thought on this ep before I can call it quits on this one.

If the Doctor was so broken up about Jenny's death, couldn't he just go back to the "replicator" or "cloning machine" and make a new one?? He could spawn a whole new race of Gallifreyans!

Did you say "74,384,338 to 1 against"? That's my lucky number!
