I've put spoilers in the subject line, but I'll try to avoid it.
OK, we've seen this type of episode on other series, but honestly, I've never seen it done better. Catherine Tate was immense, and the story had me gripped. 5/5 |

A quicky from me this week. Another strong episode as far as I’m concerned. Truly gripping and in part reminiscent of V for Vendetta for me.
What I liked: the concept - I agree: done before but done so well – great to visit all those past events and see what would have happened without the Doctor; off-world again – at least at the beginning; Catherine Tate – from strength to strength to strength; A great supporting cast – just love Bernard Cribbens; snappy but strong character development – I really cared when the Immigrant family was carted off to the camps.
What I didn’t like: Donna’s slight tendency towards prejudice occasionally – we saw it with the guy with the stammer a few episodes back – ok good that she is a well-rounded character but still I believe that Doctor Who should be setting role models. Not sure how I feel about the return of Bad Wolf – this remains to be seen.
Apart from that loved it again. 4 out of 5. Great season!

The logic of putting The Unicorn and the Wasp where it was in the series (even though it was the first to be filmed) makes more and more sense now. We had a very light episode there, and since then it's been getting darker and darker.
There was a line in this episode which summed Donna up totally - in her incarnation before meeting the Doctor (and quite a lot after).
Donna: "Oi! Vera Duckworth, put your clogs on and go and feed 'Whippets!"
Wilf: "You can't make the world better by shouting at it."
Donna: "I can try"
As with the last episode we saw a dystopian view of humanity, but one, unfortunately, I feel is all too accurate, e.g. the immigrant families being sent to "Labour" Camps. As a past student of history, I thought that was a brilliant way to illustrate the issue. Kids watching that may ask their parents what Wilf meant by "It's happening again!" as he cried. It's a lesson that needs to be taught to every generation. |

Well - for the third week in a row - my first thought was - more clever writing.
This was a SF lovers story.
But I do wish I could take to the Donna character more.
Lot's to say on Sunday - but WOW what a teaser at the end for the big two-parter!!
This series is really going for an allout allstar ending.
Hang on - you're in for a bumpy ride!

Certainly appears to be a lot packed into the trailer. Including appearances of both Torchwood and SJA characters. (Which were also got brief mentions tonight.) Not sure I recognise the old woman in the company of some "police" though. |

Classic series reference points:
circle of mirrors—Mara in Snakedance
using mirrors for time travel—Evil of the Daleks
UNIT with non-working TARDIS hooked up to external machinery—early Pertwee era.
A very well done "what if" story. A powerful buildup for the final two episodes.
So, Rose wasn't saying "Doc- tor" in those appearances on the monitor, but "BAD WOLF"!?! |

I really enjoyed this one. As others have mentioned, I know the formula and I knew that things would be righted at the end. Still it was very well executed. A great, "What if.." story. Catherine Tate gave a wonderful performance. It was more of pre-Runaway Bride Donna.
And what a trailer. Did I see a red Dalek? |

Much like the rest of the season, this was a top notch episode. I have been a fan of Donna all season, but now that they have thrown in a new mystery surrounding her she is all the more interesting.
I was impressed with the way they handled the continuity of the retread of past events. For a moment I wondered where the master was, but quickly realized that his appearance could only have happened if the Doctor had met him in utopia. Small, perhaps obvious detail, but it could have been too easy for them to try and stuff all the major earth stories into the plot and I am glad they resisted.
After seeing the trailer, I am kind of sad that RTD is doing more stories after this season (hear me out) The way all of the prior stories/characters seem to be coming together would have been the perfect way to round off his tenure. I am sure the specials will be great as well, so this is not a 'rush him out the door' sentiment. It just has the same sort of feeling as those last few weeks of high school or university when you are revisiting all the great times and memories you have made over the years before parting ways.
I have to also say that while Torchwood is a show I have a hate/love/hate relationship with, I got really excited that Gwen and Ianto finally get to be in a Doctor Who story.
Bring on the Harkness! erm.. I mean the Darkness! |
