Well. now we are at the end of the series.
With all the complaints of Catherine Tate playing Donna in the show, it seems (to me) undeserved. She took her character and made it her own. Also she was a good counter to The Doctor's character.
What are your opinions about the character of Donna Noble and Catherine's portrayal in the show? I'd love to hear your feedback. |

Well, nearing the end... (end pendant mode!!!) 
Her story is not yet done... but so far Catherine Tate more than justified the faith the production team had in her as an actress. I don't recall any episodes where I thought she wasn't on her game, so to speak. |

Well I'm still not totally behind the Donna Noble character - but I do think it was the right direction to go after Rose and then Martha.
A change was needed - but I still find her abrasive - sorry.
I'd still like to see the return of a Doctor with two companions - male and female.
And as I think Joe mentioned - and Ken agreed with - they don't need to be from our time.

Although I agree with Dave about the future of the programme, I absolutely loved the Donna Noble character. Normal yet resouceful, she typified the fact that all of us can be great. That the Doctor can help all of his companions to access their potential. She is a real twenty-first century companion and, don't get me wrong, I feel that in their own way both Rose and martha were too, but Donna for me has represented the everyday person on the street, warts and all, better than anybody as a companion on the series.
The abrasive nature may have jarred with some of the audience sometimes but at least it was true to her character and although she has been compared much to Tegan, she was a very different personality indeed.
She has a refreshing naivety but you could apply the old adage "from the mouths of babes". She has the ability to cut to the heart of the situation, whether it be pleasant or not.
More than anything, I love the fact that she isn't perfect. I belive that it is this fact that allows the Doctor to truly let down his guard with her more than he may have done with either Rose or Martha.

I've become a big fan of Catherine Tate this year. I wasn't very familiar with her other work, having only seen her sketch show a couple of times.
Donna has become a really great companion. The character was able to question the Doctor and even stand up to him. I also enjoyed how through Donna, we could see that traveling with the Doctor brings with it amazing moments but also horrifying ones (like when she heard the captive Ood's song).
I was glad to have a companion who was not in love with the Doctor. I don't object to it but I don't think it should happen for every companion.
Most of all I'm still laughing at the line, "But I've been dieting!" |

Donna had me halfway through Partners In Crime -- and I hadn't planned to get behind her at all.
Its not a secret that I didn't like Rose after 2005 with #9 (actually, that's not quite true, it wasn't until New Earth that she began to get on my nerves), and Martha, well.... she really was just a transition girlfriend, wasn't she? So, I really do think Donna, while seriously being a bit crass at times, does represent the Everyman in most of us. |

As my icon has made clear since week 2 of this season, I think that the "regular companion Donna" has a great deal of affinity with Barbara — and it can't be a bad thing to be compared to the original Human female companion. I've thoroughly enjoyed her.
But then I never had any problems with her in "The Runaway Bride". She clearly had a chemistry with DT then, and that's all you need from a companion really.
That said she's totally surprised me as the season has gone on. Her ability to handle the intensely dramatic material with such subtlety makes me believe she may well be the best pure actor to be a companion. I may like other companions' characters more, but there's not a single one whom I think is played by a better all-round actor. If she doesn't get a BAFTA, she'll have been robbed. Cause she's leagues ahead of former winner, Billie Piper.
What's perhaps most surprising of all is that in the middle of these multi-companion episodes she's still the one that you kinda gravitate towards. It'd have been easy for her to kinda fade into the background a bit, but ultimately Catherine Tate's ability to exceed the letter of the scripts never lets you forget that the "and"s and "withs"' in the opening titles of multi companion stories have a literal meaning. She's fully the co-star of this season. |

Being the Doctor's conscience in Pompeii.
Consoling him in her brief scene at the end of "Midnight."
Her game effort at talking to the Ood, followed by her sorrow at their Song.
Her role as a "parent" in the library.
Her reprisal of "old Donna" in "Turn Left."

I had heard of the Lauren character and then saw some of her other stuff on youtube. Some was good some was bad (I'm not disrespecting her).
In the Runaway Bride she served the role pretty well. Someone that the Doctor had to constantly get out of trouble, though at some times you'd hope he didn't.
I didn't mind her that much in RB, so was going in with an open mind. And WOW - I have been impressed by her. Not all comedic actors can do serious roles well - Catherine certainly can. The toning down and wising up of her character has been a major contribution to her success, other wise it'd be too much like Ab Fab in the TARDIS.
She has been one of the strongest companions in the shows entire 45 year run. Liz Shaw comes to mind as another at this caliber, and perhaps Romana I (sorry Sam).
After this season, I'm not bovvered. |
