From The News of the World:
Emigrate! Emigrate! Dr's US trip
Two of next year’s four specials to be filmed in America
By Dan Wootton, 24/08/2008
DOCTOR Who is filming two of next year’s four specials in AMERICA—in a move that will boost David Tennant’s career Stateside.
The shows will be the 37-year-old star’s last, then the Doc will regenerate into another actor.
Viewers will see David arrive in the US to save the world with a BIG-NAME American female assistant.
Series chiefs are also planning a Doctor Who movie—but it is not known who will be the lead.
A BBC source said: “Doctor Who already has a huge following in the States. It’s on the Sci Fi channel and is watched by millions of people there every week.
“But two specials in America, with a US setting and a US assistant, will take it to another level. David Tennant is already gaining a huge following and this will make him really hot property.” The four specials will also be the final episodes for show boss Russell T Davies.
He is handing the reins to producer Stephen Moffat for the next series, in 2010. The insider added: “Russell is determined to go out with a bang and the specials will be explosive.
“We’re spending much more money on them than normal.”
Moffat is working on a Doctor Who film—and would love to get legendary director Steven Spielberg involved.
He said: “It would be great to see it in the cinemas—as long as it doesn’t get in the way of the show.” |

One mention by Moffat that a movie would be OK if it doesn't interfere with the series, and we've got someone saying he's working on a movie already? Sheesh! What happened to journalism?
Link to this "piece'...

Yeah, I would keep it in perspective from the source it is coming from... "News of the World" ??
When I see the their top news items and see "PORN: Top model's lesbian shoot shame" -- I realize the real nature of this kind of publication.

I sure hope this isn't true.
I personally don't want Dr Who filmed in America, the show should stay British.
Why America anyway, there's a whole world isn't there?
Ah well, it's probably a load of bollocks anyway. |

I have a feelin that it is quite credible. The News of the World is sister paper to the Sun and love or hate these papers, their track record for rumours has unfortunately been quite good over the last few years. The Big Name American assistant is also quite feasible - raising the programme's profile while it is on its 'year off'.
Uma Thurman is in quite a low key British drama on the BBC this week. Now that I would like to see... |

If it is the regular BBC production crew doing the work, then fine, but with all the union rule and work permits and all sorts of legal silliness, this could be a pain. But if SAG goes on strike, they may get a bargain. It may be cheaper to shoot in the US now, anyway, with the relatively weak dollar. |

The Two Doctors was almost filmed in New Orleans.
Let's not forget the shots of the Statue of Liberty in the Daleks two parter from series 3.

Do I detect some resentment?
I mean, there have been eps shot in other countries before... why not the USA?
I know we Americans are viewed as taking over everything good from other cultures and ruining it (countless examples omitted), but as long as the show is British, who cares where they shoot it for a special every now and then?
I also think they are probably considering the location of their fan-base and merch sales as well.
And, for snarkiness, I should add.

Was it any less British when they shot in Paris (City of Death), Amsterdam (Arc of Infinity), Lanzarote (Planet of Fire) or Seville (The Two Doctors)?
We Yanks have been very good to and for The Doctor.

I agree and I hope it's true. I'm in England and I'm well aware of how much 'you lot' have supported the programme over the year. Where next? Australia? |
|
P.S. It is of course possible that this message is a trap. If it is I can deal with it. P.P.S. I'm leaving this note in case I can't!
