| I think it is safe to use newspaper in this day and age since most newspapers now use a Soy based ink. I recently watched a cooking show in which newspapers were used as fuel in a grill and they stated that it was safe because "all the modern newspaper inks are soy based". |

If you substitute "Chips" with "Spam" in this menu board, it would remind me the famous Monty Python skit.

Even if you don't win the tiebreaker mate..... Well Done!
Despite various opinions the best fish and chips are sold in London where they are generally served up by Greeks who don't open unless they can get fish fresh from Billingsgate.
I don't know why it is the Greeks in London because in most other places it is the Chinese who own Fish & Chip shops. I understand when you get north of the Watford Gap into counties like Yorkshire then ownership tends to revert back to the English. Harry Ramsdens had a go at importing English Fish And Chips to the States but as I have never seen one of their establishments it is hard to know how successful they were.
I know there is a shop in New York that sells Fish and Chips because I saw it on CNN.
Here in Dallas we have The Monk which claims to be an English Pub but I never quite saw the Englishness of the pub (which plays American sports very atmospheric) or the Fish and Chips but they did do a very reasonable Steak and Mushroom pie.
I remember when I first entered to country being caught by Long John Silvers Fish & Chips. Words fail me to this day.
I think the chef had had his tastebuds shot off in the war or he had invented a new substance called polyplasifishaleyne.
Back to the Jellybabies. Taras, if you win ask for all boys cos there's a bit more on those (olde English Joke.)
Seriously, if you ask around you will probably find an English shop in most cities and you can buy some English sweets there at vastly inflated prices. My girlfriend has a particular liking for rich tea biscuits which I believe the 6th Doctor was also partial to.
Albertsons and Kroger signatature stores also carry limited supplies of English food like Malt Vinegar and brown sauce.
Once again congratulations and I hope you win the tiebreaker |

I have to agree with Badwolf on this. I am American but have spent significant periods of time in the Britain. There is no doubt that British fish and chips are vastly superior to anything I've had in the US.
There is a mom and pop Fish and Chips shop in my town and they come remarkably close to replicating the truly tasty British version, but there is still something missing.
Much sadness. |

Thanks. Easy! Home in time for tea! I think I'll celebrate by getting chips. Maybe I'll even get them with the malt vinegar, but I do have a soft spot for parmesan peppercorn sauce...

The subtle taste of a Jelly Baby will be wasted on you dear boy

It is parmesan peppercorn, if there is any parmesan, it is very subtle.
Then again, I sometimes opt for the garlic mayo or horseradish mayo... |

Since this is my first post, I am going to be a bit long winded, and there is nothing you can do about it, unless you are the moderator, but I wasn’t going to tell them that.
Hiding behind my sofa, in the wee hours of Saturday morning, watching Dr. Who, I used to think of how great it would be to be in England where all this came from. That lasted up until I moved there, and then not much after that. England is nice, but so are lots of places.
The chips are nice, but you can find nice chips just about anywhere, and if you can’t find proper chips in Boston or NY, you are just not looking. Find an Irish pub. In Boston and NY there are too many to mention. (Well maybe not Long Island, but no normal people live there any way so that’s a wash)
Now the Malt Vinegar thing has me stumped. I enjoy it on my chips sometimes, and never have trouble getting it. I can only imagine the kinds of places you go to that don’t have malt vinegar. I mean this is the great and bountiful US empire, malt vinegar is about as common as chips themselves.
Jellybabies??? A nice candy, but nothing special. For years I thought they were something special. Well for anyone that has not had one, think sour patch kids with none of the sour. They are just Jelly candies, kind of shaped like a person. Nice, but nothing special. I did like them, but that is more because I have a sweet tooth, and I like just about any sweets. The chocolate is very nice.
On a different topic that was popular a while back, you all left out the most important ingredient in making a good cup of tea. It’s the water. Your selection of tea needs to match the water in your area. If the water is poor even the cheapest tea in a bag with a string, will taste the same a fine loose tea, lousy.
Gotta, go, the toaster just poped, I have to get the butter and Marmite on before the toast cools.
Oh, and if you want to appeal to a higher authority, there isn’t one.
