Someone made a thread on a similar subject on Outpost Gallifrey (ie RTD is using the Daleks and Cybermen again) and the following reply (out of the many posted) was probably the one I agreed with most:
| [Quote =bingo99]I think this thread will be used by future historians to prove if you hand Doctor Who fans the Earth, you still can't please them. |
|
I may agree with his parallel universe comments though. I couldn't see a reason for that (unless it was just to get Pete back into Rose's life for her final exit - in which case it makes sense) but to say "oh you're bringing back these iconic characters again and again" when the majority of the series has been a whole raft of new aliens, friends and adversaries for the Doctor and co is just inaccurate. If all of this is to furnish the exit of a well known main character (and her entourage of supporting characters) then it makes sense to do so with villains that are known quantities and easily spell out the risk for the new (and younger) audience. Therefore I think the production team can justify using known villains over a whole new character for this one storyline.
And as for this guy choosing to post comments like this when he hasn't even seen the ending of the story - for goodness sake! Ok it might end up being rubbish but at least wait to see and then make the comments. I do wonder sometimes if some "fans" are jumping into the same bed as the tabloids and getting negative comments in early just so they can say "I told you so - RTD must go" if by chance they turn out to be right.
Let's face it, we've only had 2 season finales in the history of Doctor Who and they've both been within the last year or so, so I'm more inclined to cut them some slack. Now if the Daleks or Cybermen made a reappearance in season 3's finale then I'd think he had a very good point.
Let's face it this is a new Doctor Who for a new audience and it is trying to engage the old fans who kept it alive while also winning the many new ones it also requires to keep going. Some of the longer terms fans need to realise that this show is no longer just their baby. I guess every parent has to let their child grow up.
My one gripe with the second series would be the inconsistency in the characters (mainly Rose). This seems to have been largely because of so many episodes being made out of sequence. Hopefully this is something the production team can work on for the next season and especially for Torchwood.
Oh well, that's my 10p's worth.

Who is Todd Brown? He has his criticisms and opinions like many of us have already been posting here. But if he is upset about villains coming back after they have been destroyed, he must not be a Doctor Who fan for very long. How many times has a Doctor Who adversary been killed off only to return again? Davros? The Master? Etc, etc....
I agree when you do it over and over again to the same characters, it does have a negative effect as they then become too cartoonish. But I never thought for one second that we had seen the last of the Cybermen or the Daleks.

Hey Louis, just listening to the latest podshock as I write this, down here in chbilly New Zealand.
If the Cybermen and the Daleks join forces, will they create combined creatures called the Damen? What will they look like - Cybermen torsoes rolling round on Dalek bodies?
So, if the Daleks have come from the alternate Universe with the Cybermen (I havent read the whole thread on the latest ep yet) that means they weren't killed in that Universe. Does that mean the Time Lords might still exist over there? And anothere Doctor? Interesting.... |

| I think Todd Brown is just being curmudgeonly in that post. My entire life I've had to defend my love of the show to grumpy friends who disliked Doctor Who for being "too far-fetched" "too long" and "too cheap" - and now that it's back on the air suddenly I feel like defending the show from other fans? Aaaahhh! |

When I asked who is Todd Brown, I was not being facetious. I honestly don't know who he is, is he a movie/television critic? I am only assuming as such since the web site's domain name is twitchfilm. Or just some guy with a blog?

| He seems to just be a blogger but his profile on that Twitch site seems to say he's an admin. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure this guy isn't out winning any Baftas - so when he says "So, I have to ask: why have you all gotten so incredibly lazy?" it sounds like backseat driving to me. |

Definitely backseat driving, but then again, that's what we are all doing here right? Sort of the "Monday Morning Quarterback" syndrome for scifi geeks (and of course, I say "scifi geek" with pride and love, no disrespect intended).
I admit, I hate parallel universe stories but only because they are used too frequently. I also feel they are a bit of a cope out. And seriously, if the Doctor says its impossible for soemthing to happen, why does it then mean it HAS to happen -- Mickey was supposed to be in the Alt-verse for good, and now he's back, and is no one concerned for his grandmum, being left alone? |

RTD is writing for everyone. Old gits (like me), newbies and kids. Especially kids, because without the next generation of fans we will be the last generation, and the show dies with us. These last two series have been great. Better than anything we have had on for years beforehand and whilst i'm not saying we should just suck it in and be grateful for whatever uncle RTD doles we should appreciate this man is trying hard to deliver something good for everyone. Listen to his podcasts, he absolutely loves doing this show and I believe he is trying to bring it back and establish a long term future it.
So he's brought back the Cybermen and in doing it removed alot of the baggage they previously came with. Can you imagine what would happen if they had all the old series weaknesses? Silver Nemesis had them being killed by gold arrows fgs! All you'd need to finish off the whole army would be a tenner and a branch of Argos nearby.
He's pitted the Cybermen and the Daleks together and incurred the wrath of fans who are accusing him of being lazy. He's also got the front page of the Radio Times again and enough ratings and publicty to keep the show going for another couple of years . My wife, a totally non-scifi normal person sat for 20 seconds silent and shocked after the end of Army of Ghosts. She loved it, and I can only hope that her reaction was the reaction of the general public, because that is the way to keep the show going. It's not our show, it's everyones show and that means that we have to take a variety of styles in order to keep it going. Shows which satisfy the one type of fanboy dont suit another (just look at the forums)and probably get totally missed by everyone else.
Conclusion? Enjoy the show, its being made by people who love it and will try to make it as good as they can with the resources available, hopefully providing something for everyone. |

DaveO you took the words right out of my mouth and what you've said should be compulsory reading for everyone who thinks they are a critic, or who's got a blog and wants to generate some traffic, or dare I say even those armed with a podcast to make their words heard - I seem to recall that way back in the dim and distant ancient history of our favorite program the whole idea of having men roll around in a costume that had a sink plunger and the remains of what could be a broken egg whisk plus the gear stick off a pre-war Foden truck and that these characters were going to talk in a grammer more like the most annoyingly insane schoolboy was laughed at by some people.
Today Daleks are a national icon that ranks alongside the Spitfire, the Lancaster, Fish 'n' Chips, Rolls Royce, the Union Jack, Abbey Road, but if some people had their way back in the past Doctor Who wouldn't even have gone beyond its first few episodes and I hate to say it but I think there are supposed fans today who would be quite happy seeing the BBC squash the program completely never to return simply because they do not want past story lines tarnished by the shock of the new... oh dearie dearie me how awful and terrible.
I'm sick of reading about Cybusmen from an alternate universe and it all being jolly unfair and why aren't they our universes Cybermen from Mondas instead... are these people so damned thick that they think RTD can only think one or two episodes ahead... he's a writer for christsake and the majority of those involved in the SF genre can think and write story lines and arcs that span volumes and, besides which, all this gripping and moaning only serves to prove to me that these people appear to have forgotten what Doctor Who does everytime he flips the Tardis's ignition switch - he travels either through time or space or both, so unless these moaning minnies are either psychic or actually own a Tardis they don't know the future and whatever they moan and gripe about is, as we say up north, just so much meaningless twaddle.
the Queen Victoria episode
I also don't have a great deal of sympathy for people who claim to be fans yet somehow cannot recall the title of a episode.
The Girl and The Fireplace
and I have even less sympathy for anyone who compounds the issue even more by getting another episodes title completely wrong - this person either wasn't watching or just writes words and waits for traffic because they own a website and have a O level in English.
I'll keep listening to Podshock, because at least there I know we have critics who know what they are on about and do really care about the show and never make silly mistakes that show their fandom status is paper thin verging on not worth the binary data its written in. |
