Series Two Wrap Up Views: 2245

So, now that it has ended, what are everyone's comments for the overall season? Better than Series One? Satisfying? Problems? Themes?

For me, I started a little hesitant of the new Doctor but quickly grew to like him, as I tend to do with a new Doctors. I started off not liking the hinted sexuality between the Doctor and Rose and thank goodness they didn't play up that angle too much. At the end, when Rose told the Doctor she loved him, I felt it was more a deep friendship love and not sexual.

The first half of the season started great as each episode got better and better. Then it dipped down in the middle. It sounds like for most it started with "Love and Monsters' but I really thought "The Idiot's Lantern" was terrible with too many cliches. The show got back on track for the last two episodes.

Better than Series One? Tough call. There were some great episodes this season but Series One was consistantly good or better (I like "Boomtown" and "The Long Game" too!). And Eccleston was just so good so the edge goes to Series One.

    Themes?
Torchwood, obviously! And I'm glad it built to this for the final episodes. But too many references, like in "The Satin Pit", considering the Doctor had never run into the name before.

Loneliness. Be it the last Timelord to just not making that love connection with Rose, Sarah Jane, or Rennete (sorry Louis, it WAS there!)

And we had the music theme where just about ever episode had one non-Doctor Who song although sometimes forced into the episode ("The Lion Sleeps Tonight")

My ranking of episodes from Best to Least:

    "The Girl in the Fireplace"
    "School Reunion"
    "Army of Ghosts"
    "Doomsday"
    "Age of Steel"
    "Rise of the Cybermen"
    "The Impossible Planet"
    "New Earth"
    "The Satin Pit"
    "Tooth and Claw"
    "Idiot's Lantern"

"Fear Her" and "Love and Monster" are exempt since I am still watching those.

Looking ahead for Series Three, I imagine they will have to establish a new supporting cast for the Doctor. I hear Captain Jack might appear? I expect the third and final appearance of the Face of Boe (And I REALLY hope it will be that the secret is that the Timelords were hiding in a sphere in the void as well). I'd like to see the Master return. Perhaps a return of Romanna since she was the best suitable companion for the Doctor. And a continuation of the themes of loneliness for the Doc and less of the "god that walks" aspect. Perhaps some better scripts in the middle too building to a central theme and finish in the finale.

Oh, and maybe the Sontarians too but we gotta save something for Series Four.

Well, for me, I was instantly taken with David Tennant. Eccleston was great, but he was so intense, I really appreciated the fun that Tennant brought to the role. From the moment I saw him in the Children in Need special, I knew I was in for a great trip.
I enjoyed this season more than the last. Yes, there were more satsuma endings, but I don't mind them. I enjoyed the chemistry between the doctor and rose this season, as I really felt like they were a couple. By the end of the season, they were constantly holding hands, shooting each other gooey looks, and talking about the future. I enjoyed the Satan Pit (much different from the Satin Pit, Atomic99, much different... Big Grin ) and it's predecessor Impossible Planet more than any of the others, I think, because they were so dark. They keep saying Doctor Who is a children's program. If I saw those episodes when I was a kid, I would have soiled myself good, then run from the room, clawing at my eyes. And I was among those who really enjoyed Love and Monsters. The difference between last series and this series seems to be more fun, comedy, and banter. Case in point, one of my favorite exchanges was from Fear Her:
(I don't remember the exact lines)
    Doctor: Oh,Copper's hunch?
Rose: Permission to investigate further, Sarge?

As much as I loved the first series, which was ALOT, I didn't do a whole lot of out loud laughing, nor nail biting. I did a lot more of that with series two. The first series had episodes that I wouldn't show to someone to try to get them into the show. This series seemed more accessible to me. Tennant, to me, is a cross between Tom Baker and Peter Davison, who were my two favorite doctors. He has a youth about him, as well as the sense of fun. I give the season as a whole 6 Tardis groans out of 5. I think everything was perfect.
    Even the satsumas.

I don't think I can compare series one to series two. They pretty much stand separately in my mind. Though, of the two, my favorite episode is from series one.

I think the best of this season are:
    Tooth and Claw
    Girl in the Fireplace
    School Reunion
    New Earth
    Age of Steel
    Rise of the Cybermen
    Impossible Planet
    Satan's Pit
    Doomsday
    Age of Ghosts

and I just think the rest sort of meld together for me. Though in hindsight, Love and Monsters is MUCH better than Fear Her as far as story telling goes if nothing else.

I think Tennant is my favorite Doctor now. Everyone seemed to love eccelston but I didn't find him a particularly good Doctor. As for the episodes I agree that season 1 was better overall but indiviual episodes in season 2 were much much better. Satan Pit/Impossible Planet and Tooth and Claw were some of the best episodes ever and thus my vote is for season 2. And now that Rose is finally gone (if not dead as I hoped) I have a feeling it'll only get better from here. I can't wait until X-mas 2006!!!

My episode Ranking Best to Least Best (Worst would be too harsh).

    1. The Girl in the Fire Place
    2. School Reunion
    3. Doomsday
    4. The Impossible Planet
    5. Love and Monsters
    6. Army of Ghosts
    7. The Satan Pit
    8. The Age of Steel
    9. The Rise of the Cybermen
    10. Tooth and Claw
    11. New Earth
    12. Fear Her
    13. Idiot's Lantern

With regard to Season one versus Season two, I enjoyed Season Two better, however I think this is to do with the way I saw the two series.

I saw the episode "Dalek" on a trip to visit my mother-in-law last Summer, when I next visited in Fall I bought the four Vanilla discs then watched all the episodes over two or three days when I got back to the US.

Series Two on the other hand I have watched one week at a time with much more anticipation between episodes and time to deconstruct each after it showed. Additionally, this year I have got back into the Good Doctor after a long hiatus.

For the record my episode preferences for the first series are different from most opinions expressed on Podshock they are (again, Best to Least Best)

    1. Dalek
    2. The Unquiet Dead
    3. Father's Day
    4. The End of the World
    5. Bad Wolf (But only for the final 5 minutes which is pretty much the best Doctor Who scene ever, coupled with the first five minutes of the next episode - Shame the entire story wasn't so good)
    5. The Parting of the Ways
    6. The Empty Child
    7. Rose
    8. The Doctor Dances
    9. The Long Game
    11. World War 3
    12. Aliens of London
    13. Boom Town

THe Christmas Invasion would go in between The Satan Pit and The Age of Steel if we consider it part of the 2006 Series or between the End of the World and Bad Wolf in the 2005 Series (Which the BBC considers it to be - on the website - but not on its DVD schedule)

I thought the 2006 series got off to a good start and was fairly solid for the first two thirds of it, and then after The Satan Pit it fell into a pit. So I was a bit weary of where it may be going at that point, but it seemed to find it's earlier momentum for the last two episodes of the series.

My best to worse list for 2006 would look something like this:

    - The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit
    - School Reunion
    - Army of Ghosts / Doomsday
    - Rise of the Cybermen / The Age of Steel
    - Tooth and Claw
    - New Earth
    - (The Christmas Invasion [if I had to include it in this series])
    - The Idiot's Lantern
    - The Girl in the Fireplace
    - Fear Her
    - Love & Monsters

Although I might rearrange the order many of these after reviewing them again now that I have seen the complete 2006 series. Even now, I am allowing for wiggle room for many of the episodes after the third listing and prior to the last two on my list.

    Cheers,
    Louis

After watching all of Season One again I really feel as if Season Two illustrates the production gang hitting their stride. From a purely visual standpoint, S2 seems to have a much richer and more lively color palate than its predecessor.

And how fitting, as lively is exactly the word I would use to describe the writing and acting in this season as well. Simply put, wonderful TV.

Aaaah, that's too funny! Forgive me. It was late and my spelling isn't at its best anymore.

However, I'm now picturing the Doctor letting go of the rope in the pit and landing in....a nice comfy soft room with satin pillows, a lava lamp, and cheetah-pattern rugs.

So...did you finally get to watch them? Did you need to reorder your list? I'm personally surprised that no one else ranked New Earth at the bottom. I haven't typed up an official ranking, but I know New Earth was my least favorite episode.

Not yet. I'll view them after my vacation and the box set for Series One has arrived so I'm watching all the Confidentials I missed.

Originally, I gave NEW EARTH a not so great rating but I softened on my rating after a second viewing.

Geez, I still got the GENESIS OF THE DALEKS DVD to watch too! Not enough time.

Boy, this was a tough call...

Best I could come up with in ranking was this:

    1. School Reunion - Loved the closure with Sarah Jane. The rest of the plot was inconsequential. Giles was great.
    1. The Girl in the Fireplace - what a lovely, lovely episode. Shares the #1 spot
    1. The Impossible Planet - wow.
    1. The Satan Pit
    2. Doomsday
    2. Army of Ghosts
    2. Love & Monsters
    2. Tooth and Claw
    3. Age of Steel
    3. Rise of the Cybermen
    4. The Idiot's Lantern
    4. New Earth
    5. Fear Her

If you think you can rank the list in the actual order they appear here, you really can't. I really do think the numbers speak for themselves, sharing the #1 and #2 spots were the best episodes of the season in no particular order.

As for Tennant, I don't like him nearly as much as Eccleston. I think he's hamming it up too much, whereas Eccleston was acting with true depth. You could see the hurt in his eyes all the time, even in times of fun. He really portrayed a wounded Timelord.

Tennant is a bit over-confident. But hey, all regenerations are different, I just didn't take to this one as easily.

We'll see what he does without Rose... SEason 3 is going to be a new adventure for sure!

    Sean.

One solid hope is worth a cartload of uncertainties.

I'm counting TCI in here, too, since you have to place it somewhere, and I don't think it quite fits in series 1.

    1. The Girl in the Fireplace
    2. The Impossible Planet
    3. Doomsday
    4. Army of Ghosts
    5. The Satan Pit
    6. Age of Steel
    7. Rise of the Cybermen
    8. Tooth and Claw
    9. School Reunion
    10. The Christmas Invasion
    11. The Idiot's Lantern
    12. New Earth
    13. Fear Her
    14. Love & Monsters

I have to say that I perfer Eccleston's persona, but I think the story strength from both series thus far is very close to being equal (and if you remove L&M from the mix, series 2 might actually beat series 1).

My favorites were the two-part series finale, the "Impossible Planet/Satan Pit" story, and "School Reunion."

Least favorites were the Cybusmen introduction and "Love and Monsters."

I would rate the rest of them at about 3 TARDIS groans: enjoyable, but not pivotal.

In some ways, except for the obvious regeneration, it is somewhat difficicult to separate the two series for evaluation, in my opinion. There was so much overlap in the stories, and obviously these two series will be set apart from what comes before and after with its unique, recurring supporting cast.

As I have mentioned in other posts, I think that the dialogue in new Who is far superior to anything we saw in the classic series. "School Reunion" bears this out perfectly, with Rose seeing her future in Sarah's past, Mickey getting to say, "The ex and the missus: every man's worst nightmare!" (classic line!), and the Doctor finally meeting his match in a group of teenagers (as a high school teacher myself, I found his discomfort pricelesss).

Overall, the development of the relationship between the Doctor and Rose is amazing, and the tale of her departure was as emotional as anything that I have ever seen on the big screen.

And I agree that Tennant is much funnier than Eccleston. Remember the Sycorax growling, "WHO ARE YOU?!?" and the Doctor roaring back, "I DON'T KNOW!!!"? Yeah, from that point I knew that the Tenth Doctor was going to be inspiring much laughter.

Favorite/most memorable moments of series 2?

    1. Rose saving the world, falling toward the void, and the Doctor screaming.
    2. Sarah running into the TARDIS in the school basement, turning around to see the Doctor and realizing that "It's you."

And, yeah, the music did much to contribute to the ambience of both those scenes.

Here's my overall listing of Series Two from best to worst.

    1. The Girl in the Fireplace
    2. School Reunion
    3. The Impossible Planet
    4. Doomsday
    5. Army of Ghosts
    6. The Christmas Invasion
    7. The Satan Pit
    8. Age of Steel
    9. Rise of the Cybermen
    10. Tooth and Claw
    11. The Idiot's Lantern
    12. New Earth
    13. Fear Her
    14. Love & Monsters

Overall, I think I enjoyed Series Two a bit more than Series One only because I liked Tennant's Doctor a bit better. One of the things that may have been mentioned elsewhere, but I think really hurt this series was that the writers/producers (RTD) knew from the beginning that Billie Piper was leaving and the entire season seemed to be building up Rose's relationship with the Doctor, her overall usefulness (even to the point of overshadowing the Doctor in places) and of course the constant mentions of Torchwood which I think they could have cut in half and still been effective with. All of this just to build up the drama of her leaving in the end.
I'm looking forward to the 3rd Series as they introduce a new companion to a Doctor we're already familiar with and possibly go in a much less emotional area with the Doctor and more into the Adventure and fun that I think the kid in us still craves!
