I bought a Sony PS3 on Tuesday - and now I'm posting to GE via it using the builtin wireless to my router!!!!
It came with 1 film (Casino Royale) 1 Game (Tiger Woods Golf '08) and an extra wireless joypad.
I also bought 3 more films - Pirates of the Caribbean (at World's End), Fantastic4 ROTSS, Spider-man 3
Total price 417 quid!! - that's about $800
Using a USB keyboard & mouse to surf.

Cool. I also bought one a couple months ago... Back when the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD battle were still just about equal... So I got it essentially as a Blu-Ray player. Already having an X-Box 360 and with the addition of the HD-DVD player for it. I was covered for playing back high definition discs. Be it HD-DVD or Blu-Ray discs. I also figured by going this route instead of a stand-alone high definition disc player, it means which ever or if there was ever a winner in the HD disc format wars, I would still have a game machine and it will still play the HD discs already made for it... So I wouldn't be left with a orphaned machine.
I use the PS3 really as a Blu-Ray player. It came with one game.. what was it... some off-road racing game, I can't think of the title right now. I played it a couple of times and put it away. It didn't come with any movies, but it had an offer for five free movies via mail. In fact, they just arrived yesterday.
The PS3 also does an excellent job in upscaling regular DVDs as well. So I am using it now as my main playback machine for both Blu-Ray and regular DVDs.
Cheers,

I have a Sony stand alone Blu Ray player and about 20 movies, the hi-def picture quality can be very variable disc to disc. The first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Bladerunner & Final Fantasy are easily the best Picture Quality discs I have. So I would recommend them for that Wow factor. Plus for $27.95 the 5 disc Bladerunner set is easily the best movie/extra package I have ever seen. The third Pirates movie picture quality is very average compared to the first.
I am very interested in any other outstanding PQ Blu Ray movies that people are aware of - as most are merely of "average" quality, i.e. not much better than broadcast quality HD.
How are the Spiderman movies? I own the first two on DVD and am a little loathed to repurchase them (I have not repurchased any DVDs on Blu Ray). I haven't bought Spiderman3 in any form yet, as $35 seems steep for for the Blu Ray of a pretty rubbish movie, and I dont want to invest in further movies on DVD, but I might be persuaded to buy the boxset to get Spiderman 2 in hi Def if the image quality is exceptional.
Likewise, I await X2, Alien, Aliens, LOTR and Star Wars on Blu Ray.
Anyone get 2001 or CE3K as I might get those too if the PQ merits it
I believe that in the US broadcast/cable HD is transmitted at fixed bandwidth of about 19Mb/s, so resolution drops in scenes with much movement.
Blu Ray uses variable bitrate, most movies go into the 20 - 30 Mb/s range for action scenes, however Pirates 1 goes averages about 20Mb/s for stationary scenes and goes up to about (well maxs out) at about 53Mb/s for the action scenes. |

Well firstly I've not yet watched the BLu-Ray films - I beem sorting out firmware updates, wireless internet and downloading 'Free' trailers etc.
In the UK those four films were 20,25,28 & 30 quid - that's 40 to 60 dollars!
For codecs and bitrates check this list:-
here
You could download this Spreadsheet - 81kbs:-

As to the picture quality I've read that early transfers - especially the MPEG2 versions are not the best ie I think Fifth Element was re-done to improve on the first attempt.
By the way you need a TV that will show 1080p at 1920x108 (Full HD) to see them at their best - sorry if you know that.

Oh yes, without question the new HD release of Blade Runner is sweet! It is a great treatment for a great film. Well deserved and long awaited. The last time it received such loving treatment was the Criterion Laser Disc.
I can confirm that the Close Encounters of the Third Kind and 2001: A Space Odyssey Blu-Ray discs have great picture quality.
In fact, I was telling Ken that upon watching 2001 on Blu-Ray you can read all the hardware labels and readouts on the monitors. Being that I was too young to have seen 2001 on the big screen when it was released, this was the first time seeing the film with such clarity that all the little details were visible.
Yeah, I will be all over Alien, Aliens, and of course all the Star Wars films once they make their way to HD discs... even though I have them multiple times on DVDs as well as LDs. It's just a matter of time before they announce a release date. We know that all the SW films have already been mastered on HD video as they have been shown on Cinemax and HBO in HD (I have them saved as such on my TiVo)... but you will always get better quality on disc itself in 1080p.
Cheers,

| dude you've gotta play Resistance: Fall of Man its alternate history game about instead of WW2 happening these creatures called the chimera come out of nowhere and take over most of Europe then they invade England and when that happens the Americans send in troops to help and they all die except one American solder and you play as that solder. |
