I've just tried posting a link in the General forum about a Billie Piper interview
The URL is:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/newsid_4380000/newsid_4380400/4380427.stm
But when I use the URL tab above two things happen (have happenned)
1. I get the 'http' bit repeated - which I can edit out manually
2 There is an openning 'a' but not a closing '/a'
3 It would be nice to not just have the word 'here' appear but be able to put a meaningful title
- I have done this on some posts by cut and pasting an earliy link and just manually changing it - but its not very elegant.
Cheers Louis - sorry to mess things up - daveac |

Usually you need to press the button a second time to close the tag. With the URL tag, it closes the first tag and gives an area for putting in text for the link.
<a href="http:// <-- first press
">here</a> <-- second press
This following link:
Q&A: Billie Piper
Uses this code:
<a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/newsid_4380000/newsid_4380400/4380427.stm"> Q&A: Billie Piper </a>
Replace the text "here" with what you want to appear for the link.

By clicking on a formatting button once it creates the open tag, and displays a '*' (asterisk) on the button reminding you to press the button again to close the tag. There is also the "Close Tags" link (which I haven't tried yet) which I assume will close all open tags...

Dave,
Your blank message is missing the "/" in the closing "Quote" tag...
Screwing up the Quote tags really messes up messages in the forum software used here.
I always use the Preview button before submitting, because it is very easy to screw up HTML and the other tags... Also the Code tag does not work as expected with Quote tags within it...

Thanks for helping out Taras.
I am going to be once again attempting to update the forum software used here this weekend. I tried upgrading it last weekend, but believe it or not, it brought the entire site down... it remained down until I was able to revert back to the previous installation from backups.
The updated forums software will allow for the standard bulletin board tags using "[" "]" as tags (for example: [b]This would enable bold text[/b] ) in addition to the html tags presently used.
Cheers,
Louis |

What is the trigger for the Forum software to start a new page? I notice that sometimes a page can be very long before the software decides to add a new page to a topic whilst other times it seems very short.
Is the trigger for a new page based on time interval between posts, number of posts, length of postings (obviously not) or some other criterion? |

Regarding my last question. An interesting thing just happened. I was viewing the page on which Romana is best Magpie's messsage was the last one on the page. I went to post a reply and was told I needed to log on. Once I did this and went back to the Topic Magpie's message was now the first one on a new page.
Is dynamic page settting used on a user by user basis? i.e pages look different to different users? |

The default is 15 posts per page. But you can change this in your preferences in Forum Features under the User Functions in the left side bar (after you log in).
Sorry, I meant to reply to your original post earlier, but I was distracted and forgot to come back to reply.
Cheers,
