STRANGE (mystery with demons and Tom Baker!) Views: 570

This show only had seven episodes but like so many deserved to live longer. Usually sitcom actor Robert something or other plays a defrocked priest (I forget if he left of his own accord or not). A nurse, played by a beautiful actress is involved in his world when her son starts acting strangely, his father actually a demon of a race that want to infiltrate our world and have, living among us. No one is sure who is one and who is not. Can they be, as the boy's father, seemingly harmless?

Each and I mean each episode, bar maybe one, is a mystery to solve with the demon at the heart. I could figure out maybe one of the eps but the thing is, once the villain (if you can callsome of them that) is all makes sense from what went before. SIr Ian McKellan plays an overseeing bishop or something like that, who tends to want to overlook and hide all the stuff, like a conspriacy. His villainy is top notch and he's very funny and dry at times.

Helping the nurse and the priest is one of the stars of Primeval (at least in the first story; in the rest he's played by someone else I think or was it the other way round?)--the one who plays the young college student in PRIMEVAL. This student has a plate in his head and cannot be affected by demons. They are also helped by a Down's boy who can get telepathic messages whenever a demon is about to strike. He also works for the bishop, cutting his lawn, to find out what is going on on that side.

Added to this, the bishop has a young underling who seems to take all his crap...but who has another agenda.

The villains are inspired, the plots riveting and logical...with such twists that one thinks, for example, a vampire is afoot when it's entirely something else...maybe. One thinks a demon is at work when it's really a human...maybe. Truly well done and acted...and at times, very, very funny but in line with the scares of the rest.

Tom Baker in the last ep as a blind monk is inspired. He's just marvelous and I adored him, simply adored him in this role. He is funny, scary, and is he a bad guy in this????

ANyway I wished the show had returned with Tom as a regular. From what I read on a fan site if it returned they were going to change it and kill off the Down's boy and maybe cripple the young computer expert. If so, I"m glad it was not renewed.

Added to all the plots, the priest (or maybe he was just a pastor) had a wife or girlfriend (?) who was maybe killed by a demon who also attacked and left him wounded...wounds which act up from time to time.

THIS SHOW IS WORTH YOUR TIME for entertainment value if nothing else!
