Hey guys
So for some odd reason, Paramount decided to premiere Star Trek in Sydney, Australia. But I won't complain as it meant that, A$100 later, I had me some tickets to go tonight!
Having just got home, I thought I'd give you some brief thoughts. No spoilers, as I'd love people to be able to experience it fresh like I did. So just some general points:
1. Relax, they didn't blow it. It's not a perfect film, but it was hugely enjoyable, and the crowd lapped it up. In fact there was a standing ovation for JJ and the crew at the end, but I guess that's probably par for the course at world premieres.
2. It's a quite different tone from previous Trek. It feels more like Buck Rogers slam-bang space opera, without so much of the ethical dilemmas or the epic scope of other Trek films. For me, this is a flaw of sorts in the film. It starts with a really amazing mythic quality, but then that got diluted as the film went on, which was a shame. Be interesting to see if I have the same feelings on a repeat viewing. But it definitely has more of a fast-paced pop action feel than the trailers suggest.
3. It is VERY fan friendly. They have gone to great pains to explain its place in continuity (and for me this is another small drawback - the Leonard Nimoy scenes are actually among the weaker ones in the film), and there are lots of great nods to classic episodes and scenes from past movies.
4. There are heaps more random aliens than in the previous movies. Very cool.
5. There's an odd strand of almost farcical humour that recurs throughout the film. It's not denigrating like Scotty knocking himself unconscious in Star Trek 5, but it's certainly an odd tonal balance JJ Abrams is attempting. These moments were always funny, but I wasn't sure they totally matched to the tone of the scenes they came in the middle of.
6. Almost all of the new cast are outstanding, but Chris Pine is particularly charismatic as Kirk - funny and cocky, and hitting on every woman he passes with a fervour that would put even Captain Jack to shame.
7. It 's definitely one of the most cinematic Trek films. The cinematography is outstanding and inventive, the sound design is brilliant (ranging from cute callbacks to the classic series, to very effective use of silence in some moments), and the production design is achingly beautiful (not just the ships but the design on the Vulcan architecture too). It's a feast for the eyes, and often a very visceral experience in the battle sequences (though I was sitting very close to the screen!)
I might leave it at that for now.
It was a great night, JJ Abrams and the cast were all very lovely and friendly, spending heaps of time signing stuff for fans on the red carpet, and then I dug the movie to boot. I'll definitely be going back to see it a second and probably a third time when it goes on general release in May. |

| Great review, thanks. I've always liked the Trek Films more than the TV shows as I feel the characters mellowed. That said, I've been burned by TREK tv shows in the past but I'll reserve judgement. I have high expectations, however frm all the advance promos |

In the end, I can't bring myself to watch this film or hope that its a success, and I've been a Trek fan all my life.
For starters, I'm beginning to detest prequels in all shapes and forms. Second, half the casting in this film has me cringing. Third, everything I've seen so far (and yes, that is only trailers and tv spots) screams 90210. That is not Star Trek to me. Fourth, I've now read spoilers, and they only confirm some of my suspicions about how this is completely removed from Trek I want to see. |
