From 1981 comes this gem of a mini series. CODENAME ICARUS is on dvd in episode format. Previously it was on video but in a shorter format, condensed and cut. In the middle of INVISIBLE ENEMY, I needed something good to watch and wary, I put this on later in the evening, thinking I'll try one or two episodes and see how it is, thinking it might be boring.

I was so wrong. A bit slow in the first episode, the story concerns missiles (and military planes and harmless birds) being blown out of the sky by something akin to a laser, possibly. It is the height of the Cold War.

Also, a 15 (he looks more like 18) year old prodigy is hiding his intelligence from ...well, everyone but it is revealed to his parents and more sinisterly to someone he talks to on a computer (what looks like an old IBM or Comodore and direct DOS!). He also likes to bird watch...

Anyway, this leads the boy, Matt Smith (played by Barry Angel) to a private school of about a dozen or more students...and the school is quite sinister underneath. If I were Matt I would have left at once. The staff are controlling.

At the same time, a government agent is put on leave for checking on the Icarus Schools which are set up in many countries around the world. The school is using techniques akin to the Village in THE PRISONER.

The story gripped me so much, I watched all five episodes in one night. The political intrigue was well done, the story tight and dialog believeable. Angel's acting starts out great but by the end he falls apart but the character is supposed to fall apart, too. That said, most of the other acting is good and I recognized a few familiar faces from other British stuff. The bad guys, if they are bad guys (or are they trying to protect the students or use them?) are played with conviction and deadly earnest.

The series might have come from a book/novel. It is worth watching. One thing about it is that it evokes the 1980s England well with charming British streets, parks, country roads and gateways, statues, lots of green grass, stark rooms, bright blue skies (?!), and old style computers that look ancient these days. The entire thing is shot on film and in a way remidns me of the movie WAR GAMES and THE PRISONER but has it's own flavor, twists and turns. It may have come before WAR GAMES.

    a good perhaps forgotten gem
