I just recently found on line a site that has pictures and a graphic novel of the Outer Space Men. These toys by colorforms were bendable figures of men from Mars, Venus, Uranus (not that anus!), Neptune, Pluto, Saturn, and Mercury. They were so cool. As a child they were imaginative in play. Glad to see they were not forgotten. I used to make up stories in my play as a 6 year old!
Also one must mention the Aurora models of the 60s and 70s: those of the Universal Monsters: The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Frankenstein Monster, Dracula, the Wolf Man, The Hunchback, the Phantom of the Opera, The Bride of Frankenstein, the Mummy, King Kong, Godzilla, and the Invisible Man (but I think I didn't have that one). I hope I didn't leave any out. They all had parts that glew in the dark. There was also a skeleton man called the Forgotten Prisner (possibly of Zenda?). These were so cool.
Model kits of spaceships also abounded, the Spindrift from LAND OF THE GIANTS and a giant snake with two of the Earth people; the Voyager from FANASTIC VOYAGE cartoon, the unique Flying Sub from VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA and the Seaview, the giant cyclops (two kits, one with and one without the Chariot) from LOST IN SPACE.
Then later on there were the MONSTER SCENES and PREHISTORIC SCENES. All of these can be visited on line someplace. The Monster ones had Vampirella, the Female Victim, Frankenstein, a lab set, appliances, a hanging cage, Dr. Deadly, and more equipement. Others were planned but I didn't get to see those: they were never really released. We used to pretend and mix them with the PREHISTORIC SCENES and make stories in our play: the victim was a friend of the Cro Magnon female and one of them had powers that they could talk to the various animals and dinosaurs. They were married to a CroMagnon Man and a Neanderthal. The Prehistoric Scenes had a three cavepeople, a Flying Dino, an Allosaur, a T-Rex, a spiked Triceratops and another, an Anklosaurus armor dino, a bear, a saber toothed tiger, a giant bird (that can be seen in the MYSTERIOUS ISLAND), a tar pit, a two headed snake, a cave set, and other things.
Other toys consisted of a King Kong Village from the animated KING KONG cartoon and the FLINTSTONES town. Truly amazing toys! |
