Oh dear. As ideas for tv shows and ideas in general go, this one is about the best ever. Unfortunately, I'm not sure time has been kind to this original show (the new stinks to high heaven despite better effects, the only thing better about that revival). Anyway, I still love this show to bits!
Taking a break from DOCTOR WHO-The Armageddon Factor, I watched two episodes of this show. My first encounter with this great show was the last three episodes, or rather the last sequence of the first episode and the next three. Luckily it is one of the best and I finished the entire run with the story just before this one A RIFT IN TIME, another of the best stories of this series.
The best thing about this show...well it is flexible, maybe not as much as Doctor Who, which can go anywhere and any time and if you stretch it a bit, the TP can just about do the same things in a way. But the really great thing about this show is that the heroes CAN'T kill. It might have been more dramatic if they chose not to kill but perhaps their pacifist nature before they break out into Tomorrow People makes them that way later on when they do becomes TP; the next step in human evolution by the way who can't kill and can teleport, use telekinesis, levitate etc. They can read each other's minds and sometimes enter the minds of other non TP telepaths but never mind...
Here in my first ever scene seen Stephen had to face off against three boys with sabres...and they throw a sabre to him...he can't kill them and really TP are not supposed to even hurt anyone either. The series set up interesting dilemmas like this all the time. One of the best stories SECRET WEAPON features Trevor Bannister as Col Masters who wants to use the TP as secret weapons in the Cold War. And do this he threatens the Tp any way he can...until one of his own aides breaks out into one.
Anyway one of the main reasons I posted this is that the commentary on the British version (and supposedly, I'm not sure yet, on the US version) is edited and bleeped out somewhat. Nick Briggs (for Big Finish), Nick Young (John), Liz Adare (Liz) and Peter Vaughn Clarke (Stephen)all make quite a funny commentary. Nick even gets to say wise ass once or twice and make notice of a DW joke about a police box being up in space maybe, a joke the charcter John made when STephen mentioned that even England sent up some stuff that became junk in space.
Anyway, there are a few "pissed off" and "ass" stuff but the funny things are the gay inneundo and mentions of Roger Price liking Peter so much that he lingered on his face a lot; Peter frolicking with the guest star boys; a fun hearted jab at Mike Holoway (who later played Mike Bell and inadvertently replaced Peter, a bad move, not that MIke wasn't a cool character but that Stephen should have been able to stay) when a poem mentions someone who is old, bald and agressive! Other things that Liz called OUTRAGEOUS are jokes Nick Young makes about the Chinese and the Japanese, all in good fun I'd say but it can be offensive to some.
Truth is that shows like ALL IN THE FAMILY took jabs at everyone. Nick makes fun of himself, Stephen, Nick Briggs, Liz a bit less, Roger Price, the show, etc and then throws in things like a nip in the air and a chink in his armour. Liz must have found it funny because she laughed but also told them it was outrageous and must have gotten up to leave. The funny thing is that they bleeped one or two ass words from both Nicks and a pissed off from Nick Young. And that's just the first episode and 3/4s.
Anyway the Australia version of the DOOMSDAY MEN has the full commentary. The UK version just bleeps the "bad words". Oh I do so hate censorship. This stands as one of the best stories of the TP and one that thankfully strayed away from aliens and alien invasions. |

SO the story goes something like this:
Stephen protects his older friend Chris Harding from getting caught with a rackety old van. A traffic warden or cop is about to give him a ticket. Stephen uses a new device John made to transport the van to a vacant lot and he and Chris teleport out. Chris is not one of the TP but John has created a matter transfer belt to get Chris out.
Later, Chris visits the underground lab of the Tp to thank Stephen but Stephen tells him go away...he's trying on a kilt much to John, Liz, and Chris's amusement. Stephen is to infiltrate a Scottish school where Douglas McCellan, the grandson of a general, attends. The General is suspected of being a high ranking Doomsday Man, a group dedicated to keeping up the art of war...at any cost. Stephen goes there and poses as the grand son of someone who was in the military with appropriate cover story.
Stephen obsesses over food while there and can small it telepathically when John and Liz eat. He also has to take off his underwear since it is not allowed here. There are no glass panes on the windows in the bedrooms. They get to eat cold porridge. Douglas is mean and treats Stephen a night handcuffed with his hands behind his back on a cold high rise bluff overlooking the front of the castle the school is based in. He goes back to the Lab where John derides him and makes TIM, the bio computer send him back.
Once there, he overhears the General telling Dr. Laird another DD Man about their plans to attack the Space Station Damocles, a UN peacekeeping station. To keep peace, the station has nuclear weapons pointed at Earth! Stephen meets and is warned by Paul, another boy at the school about Douglas's tricks. He goes through training, tough obstacles courses and runs.
Douglas tricks Stephen into meeting him in a gym...where he faces Douglas and two other boys with sabres. Douglas throws a sabre to Stephen, unaware Stephen cannot kill or even hurt anyone since he is one of the Tp who cannot kill even to protect themselves... |
