I got a Lasonic from an anime site which was region-free out of the box. Funny how Japan and the UK are both in region 2, but Canada is in region 1 with the U.S. The whole point of region coding was to thwart piracy, but it, along with attempts at copy-protecting audio CDs, seem to encourage, rather than reduce piracy. It just annoys the customers that pay for the product. My first region 2 DVDs was The Omega Factor. I can't wait for my Doctor Who Series One box set as well, though I read on Outpost Gallifrey (New Series DVD Issue) that there may be some problems with the release...

Blake's 7 is another example of a U.S. company missing the boat. Why are they not available in region 1???
|

This short-sighteness works both ways
I would love there to be a Region 2 set of Highlander (TV Series)
Back to Blake's 7:-
Next to Avon my other two fav characters were Vila and Soolin.
Vila often has the skills to save the day but unless Avon forsed him he'd rather get drunk. He also had some of the best one-liners.
Soolin - well she was just beautiful - a qiuck draw expert in all sences.
Oh! and of course ORAC - another with a great dry sence of humour.

And Vila would often take off his shoes, my favorite scene is when he teleports into mud in socks...

[Quote by: K Kochanski] Ah, I love Blake's 7, too. Haven't seen it in ages. Here is another show that the Sci Fi channel could show and make lots of sci fi fans happy rather than the drek they tend to show.

Especially in a weekly slot, given that there are exactly 52 episodes |

I still have all the videotapes I made from 1980's PBS showings of Blake's 7. I dust them off and watch the whole series about once every five years. I'm missing three episodes, I think. Strangely enough, one of the episodes I'm missing is the Colin Baker episode... Paul Darrow does a monumental job of carrying this series, and the acting between him and Gareth Thomas is why I watched more than three episodes; and why I still care about the show twenty years later.
Last time through (having been trained by DVD commentary tracks, I guess) I kept noticing things like the styrofoam coffee cup left on a shelf (It's in the murder mystery episode, when Blake leaves Avon and Jenna on a spacecraft in order to deliver medical supplies and Avon plays Hercules Poirot).
Despite the ludicrous science and the non-sensical politics, I am just amazed this show could even get made. The parallels between it and Firefly are incredible, and look what happened to Joss's show... |

I taped all of the shows off my PBS station in the early 80's too. But my VHS tapes are beginning to show their age. I get lots of dropout and drag. It's frustrating. My current VCR doesn't like stuff recorded on my old VCR.
I'm only missing one episode. I can't think of the title but it's the one where Gan's anger control chip malfunctions. |

Sorry - can't remember the name of that episode - but it wasn't one of the best.
I heard an interview many years ago - with the actor who played Gan - he seemed very disappointed that they didn't make more of his character.

David Jackson, who played Olag Gan, passed away last July of a heart attack. I think I remember reading about it on Outpost Gallifrey.

He did indeed, unfortunately. We reported it on Doctor Who: Podshock as well. Gan was a great character and many times under utilized.

| Someday I'll cough up the spare change for a region free DVD player. It's never a priority for me. |

Yeah so did Ken yesterday...
I am still holding out for region 1 DVDs.... but if I really want Region 1 DVDs, I need to buy the region 2 versions because as soon I get the all R2 versions, the R1 discs will be announced.
Cheers,
Louis

I loved the Blakes Seven, PBS in Dallas played off the
series 3 different times and then dropped it years ago.
I agree this would be a great series for the Scifi Channel in the US to pick up. Wonder whatever happened
to the principal actors??? |

Many of the principal actors have played roles in Big Finish audio plays, the most recent being Jaqueline Pearce in series 2 of the Sarah Jane Smith plays (also The Fearmonger). Gareth Thomas was Kalendorf in the Dalek Empire series (also Storm Warning). Sally Knyvette (Spare Parts), Michael Keating (The Twilight Kingdom, Year of the Pig) and Paul Darrow (The Next Life) have also made appearances. Many played roles in the Soldiers of Love series of audio plays as well. For film and TV roles, IMDB should have most of their work.
