I've used a cell phone for Talkshoe before and it was fine. Check out the Heroes podcast "Cranky Hero" at here. Just make sure you don't breathe onto your mic.

I see there are a series of video tutorials on how to use TalkShoe on their web site here.
They may be of some use for those that are struggling with how it all works.

I had the same problem when trying to connect for the Smith and Jones show via the Internet. I eventually had to dial by telephone. I still haven't had any luck trying to connect to TalkShoe via my Mac. I can listen (although the connection keeps dropping, which means that I miss bursts of the conversations while the program rebuffers), but not talk. Thank goodness for cheap long-distance phone service.

Depending on timing 75 or 76 is now finished with the live portion of production. Sorry if I sounded a bit disjointed during my time on, lack of sleep and Skype lag wern't doing me any favors today. Next week I hope to be better rested for the comments. What is the max unmuted folk at once? I know that you have to watch for background noise but many of us can mute our mikes, by the time you get to the other listeners most of what we wanted to comment on has already been discussed.

Thanks to everyone involved in today's live podcast. Although I didn't mention it during the podcast, it seems that I need to call my dentist tomorrow morning as I am dealing with a bit of a toothache today which distracted me a bit while recording (and as usual, I hardly had any sleep -- but what else is new?)
Cheers,
Louis

I am sorry to learn of your trouble Joe. It shouldn't be a Mac thing as Taras, DarthSkeptical, and myself were all connected via our Macs (perhaps others too, I didn't poll the others participating on what platform they were using).
Hopefully, you can chime in with us next week.

Those with Skype lag, are you guys using a current PC/Mac or an older model. Maybe the combimation between Skype and TalkShoe may require more horsepower... just speculating. |

I was connected to the chat via TalkShoe on a MacBook Pro, but used my cell phone to dial in to TalkShoe for audio. The initial echo was my not muting my Mac.

To my understanding, for those that do not have Skype Out minutes or do not have the unlimited annual call-out service from Skype, you can use the Gizmo Project to call into our live podcast recordings for FREE. You do this by using what is known as a SIP number to call into Talkshoe. Basically think of a SIP number like an IP address. Gizmo and other VoIP software phones such as SJPhone and Zap can use SIP to make calls. In fact, Talkshoe themselves are in the early stages working on their very own VoIP software.
The SIP number for Talkshoe is 66.212.134.192.
Although I haven't tested it yet myself, to my understanding using Gizmo Project, you can call out using the SIP number by entering 123@66.212.134.192. Once connected, you will be prompted for the talkcast ID and your Talkshoe ID number... and then you are in.
For those unfamiliar with the Gizmo Project, it is similar to Skype. Both have their pros and cons. Way back when, we did use the Gizmo Project to record our podcasts. Essentially to bring James into the recording from the UK. But once we needed to add multiple people at once is where Gizmo failed and we stuck with using Skype. We haven't used Gizmo in a while, so perhaps they have improved their conferencing functionality. I don't know. But it is not necessary for anyone that wants to call into our live recording.
The Gizmo Project is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux.
Cheers,
Louis

Hi there.
I haven't downloaded/installed the Talkshoe software yet, and I would like to participate in future discussions, but I have a request. Having the roundtable discussion the day after the initial broadcast makes it hard for me, and possibly others, to have seen the episode.
The "torrent of bits" that contains the new episodes usually don't finish downloading until Sunday afternoon for me in Los Angeles and by that time you have already had the discussion of the episode. Would it be possible to have a one week delay to discuss the episode so that more people will have been able to see the episode?
Thanks.

While I enjoyed the roundtable discussion Louis, I did feel that there was a bit of overlap in the comments.
I hope that not too many people participate in the Review section of the podcast as it may become a bit convoluted and repetitive.
However, I totally like the live feedback section idea, where us listeners could 'ring in' ask you three (or more) a question and get a short discussion of the answer.
Just my two quid,
Cheers,
Liyster. |

Hi Derek,
Thanks for your feedback. I can appreciate what you are saying. The reason we do it on Sunday, the day after transmission on the BBC is because people had expressed getting the review podcasts as soon as possible. The live version allows for people to receive the raw version of the podcast without any post production within 30 minutes of it being recorded, or alternatively, people can listen live to it while it is being recorded.
We have been considering possibly moving the recording time later on Sunday so that our friends down under in Australia could possibly participate. Due to the time difference, it is the middle of the morning when we record in Australia. If we do it later, it would still be morning there, but later in the morning.
As it is now, being a little bit behind in post production work, the live episode review podcasts - the finished versions (after post-production work) are going on the feeds a couple weeks after the episode originally transmitted. If we waited another week to record it, I fear it would hold it up even further before it goes out on the feeds.
It is a bit of a balancing act.. I am hoping to catch up on some of the post production work if I can so that they are only delayed a week at most instead of two before going out on the feeds.
Also by doing it on Sunday after transmission, the episode we are reviewing is fresh in everyone minds. Perhaps if we do it later on Sunday, it may work out better for yourself and others in similar situations.
Cheers,
Louis |

Hi Liyster,
Yeah, that can and does happen sometimes. Valid point. We try to censor ourselves to a degree not to repeat what others may have already pointed out, though sometimes that is hard to do because everyone has their own perspective on any given point or plot element in the episode being reviewed.
We will try to not overlap as much in the future. The good news is that our last live podcast had much more live listener feedback in it. I suspect as we go along and more of our listeners learn about the live shows, we will get more listener feedback in the live shows.
Thanks again... Your feedback is well worth more than two quid.
Cheers,
Louis |
