I picked up issue 1 of the new mag SciFi Now a couple of days ago at my local newsagent - it's probably old news but you guys get a mention.

    DOCTOR WHO PODSHOCK

    Now this is seriously meaty.

Averaging at around 90 minutes an episode this incredibly geeky dissection of the doctor is the perfect accompaniment to the television series.

Quirky and camp the presenters are clearly massive Dr Who aficionados and their passion and sincerity shines through.

    Their personalities do not, however.

Unfortunately, the voiceover is slow dull and very hard work.

Casual observers beware - this is almost scarily in depth - but those out there who are hungry for as much Tennant insight as possible would do well to subscribe immediately

    four out of five stars

Just thought you might be interested.

Actually, I was not aware of it. Thanks for the tip. Is this a UK based magazine? Australian? Stateside? Or elsewhere?

Thanks for sharing it here. Perhaps we can return the favour and review the magazine on our podcast. Twisted Evil

    Cheers,
    Louis

    SciFi Now

Is this the publication in question? UK based and on issue 3 at the moment. Would really like to see a scan of the article.

    Cheers,

    What utter nonsence!

James Ken and Louis have strong and very distinct personalities that come over very well in the Podcast.

They create a friendly , informative and welcoming arena for others to safely express their thoughts and ideas on an international platform.

    You Guys rock!

I concur with Daveac. My busy work schedule doesn't afford me time to post much or participate in discussions, but I do make time to listen in to these podcasts, and the personalities involved contribute significantly to my enjoyment.

Then again, I'm from Boston, and I have yet to meet a New Yorker who doesn't have a strong personality. Smile Joking aside, it's a great team with a terrific dynamic, and they wouldn't have the listeners if they didn't have the personalities.

    Cheers,
    Shawn

I hope I don't sound overly critical when I say that's an incredibly fair review.

It's a 4 out of 5, and the one thing taken to task is the density of the voiceover. That's true. Laying to one side these TalkCastsówhich aren't being presented as "normal" showsóthe "studio-recorded" bits are sometimes not as aggressively edited as they could be. I know the burden on Louis has been extreme, which would argue against him doing an even closer edit, but take a hard listen to the difference between an episode of Podshock versus one of the Whocast.

You rarely hear a moment of stuttering or pause or repetition in a Whocast, because it's been edited out. Podshocks do tend to wander a bit. Yeah, Podshock sounds like a more natural conversation, but it is rather dense.

I disagree strongly that Louis, Ken and James come across as, well, Al Gore or anything so dire. But if you pluck the best moments out, you naturally will see their personalities in starker relief.

Yep, 4 out of 5 is not bad at all... With the exception of the last month or so of episodes, I don't usually give all the new Doctor Who episodes such high ratings...

I may have a "face for radio," but it seems I also have a "tongue for silent movies" Wink I certainly know my own limitations and downfalls. I will be the first criticize myself (vocal presence) and the editing of the podcasts.

In matter of fact often the case is just trying to get them edited and out as quickly as possible so they don't get staler than already are at times... I know that if I was able to devote more time, more could be done with them. But alas this is not my full time job... Cry So some sacrifices in terms of quality have to be made. There have been plenty of times when we are so backed up in post-production that it becomes a bit daunting. Recording is the easy part really... at least time-wise. Sure the recording session could go on longer than we expect or should... but when the recording is done, it is done. Putting it all together and cleaning it up as much as possible later in post is really the time consuming process.

Being that I "make a living" working with digital media all day long with computers... and having to do it in my leisure as well... I am not complaining by any means, but only making a point that even I need to get away from the computer now and then and get some air (or at least some time away from the keyboard and mouse).

So, I am not making excuses, just telling it like it is and I will be the first to say that things could be better on many different levels, but sometimes you just have to grin and bear it... to get it out there and keep rolling.

I continue to be flattered and amazed at amount of people that do listen to the podcast. I can probably speak on behalf of Ken and James as well as myself of course that we are very grateful for it, yet personally I still cringe listening back to my own segments at times... and wonder how others can endure it - LOL.

The podcast is far from being perfect. But that is okay... Have there been improvements? Sure. Is there room for more? Sure -- plenty. It gives us something to strive for and work towards. Will it ever please all the people that listen to it? No. What ever does or could?

    Cheers,
    Louis

It is indeed UK based and it's published by Imagine Publishing, in Australia we tend to be 1-2 months behind when it comes to magazines as they are apparently transported by sea freight so we've only just had issue one on the the shelves here.

Thats the one, if my scanner wasn't deader than a Dodo I'd see wht I could do about a scan but it's only a box of text with a small picture of David Tennant - not too exciting.

I probably should've mentioned that it's a half page article and the other two podcasts they mention are the official Lost podcast and Ronald D Moore's Battlestar Galactica podcast so you guys are in good company.

I guess when I'm feeling richer I could see if I can find some more issues of the mag and post them over ( I had a pipe busrt last week and have the plumbing bill from hell waiting to be paid ) if you guys can't lay you hands on a copy locally - let me know !

If only I had a Tissue Compression Eliminator for the bloke who wrote that review. How could anyone ever complain about the personalities on Podshock? I've been listening to the program for several months. Ken, Louis, and the Mighty Naughton have become a staple of my drive time up and down I-5 in Southern Cali. It's like having great friends hanging out and talking about the latest episodes. And I can't even tell you how many times I've listened to DarthSkepitcal's reviews of Human Resources. Rich, detailed, and wonderfully quirky reviews. Those clips are legendary.

btw - I'm the new guy. Nice to meet you Cool

Thank you for the kind words, Louis. I figured it was time to stop being a member of the silent masses and finally get in the game! And before I forget, thanks for the add on myspace.

btw - Do I still need to wait till the first of the month to cash it? Wink
