[Quote  by:  Louis]We can if we like. It would be akin to advertising and promoting. I just wish that Talkshoe did not lump them together. In other words, I wish they would rather have a section on the top which could be labeled "Featured Podcasts" or something like that, in which podcasts could pay to be placed on it for higher visibility rather than being placed in the top 10 podcasts as it dilutes the podcasts that "naturally" make it there.
[Quote  by:  merlin_mccarley]Featured-$19.95 mo. Shows up in the home page and browse page and the featured page.

Top Ten for Category-$9.95 mo. Shows up in the top ten for category only.

And yes I think that the Top Ten that pay for the slot should have a marker that shows that fact. Shows like DW Podshock made the list naturaly from listener interaction and deserve the distinction.
Right, and I agree with you in principle. We should be number one cause we are. But that ain't how it is. It's a totally rigged system. So, in my view either we pay to get our "rightful" spot, or we don't. Trying to aim for "the highest rated of the non-payers" is a kinda sad goal. It's like getting named Most Likely to Succeed in your yearbook when all everyone remembers is who was the Prom Queen. Yeah, the one is more important than the other, but it's other that gets the attention.

Because it's not obvious who's paying and who's not, the average user won't know that we've been "robbed". So we have to decide whether it really matters to us at all what our ranking is, because to get our true place, we have to pay for it—eventually. If it's not really worth it, then we should quietly retire the subject and just enjoy what we're doing for our own sakes.

[Quote  by:  DrWho001] On the podcast there was a mention that there will soon be a studio podcast release alongside the live ones. Will this Studio one automatically update for us who subscribe to the podcast via itunes?

All the podcasts (live and studio) are available via the feeds as soon as they are released. On both the AAC and MP3 feeds.

    Yes.

But also be aware that Talkshoe themselves went ahead and put the live show only feed in iTunes as well.

So if you are subscribing to our AAC or MP3 feed, you will get all our podcasts... whereas right now, the Talkshoe feed will only have the live shows.

    Cheers,
    Louis

Thanks tarashnat and Louis. I subscribed by finding it on itunes, so I should get it. Many thanks again.

Does the name of the feed in iTunes have the word "Live" in it? If so, it is probably the live show only feed that Talkshoe placed in iTunes. If it does not contain "Live" in the feed name, then it is one of our regular feeds which has all our shows. Or another way to tell is to go to the iTunes page for that feed and see how many past shows are listed, and whether or not they are all live shows.

    Cheers,
    Louis

So how do they determine the order to list the podcasts that are paying to be in the top 10? Is the secondary criteria for sorting them back to audience size and participation?

In other words, if we pay for a paid listing... and we are moved "to the top" will we get listed "naturally" among other paid listings? Otherwise we could actually be paying to be in the same exact slot we are now.

    Cheers,
    Louis

So why do we care about Talkshoe ratings if they are potentially meaningless? Put another why, why don't we just pony up and pay the $9.95 or whatever it is? Is there some "honor" in the title of the "highest rated podcast of those not paying for it?"

"Pony up"? Darth, you slay me Wink

I dunno. I wouldn't be surprised if it weren't something totally dumb like "alphabetically", or "by order of payment received date". Because it's not being entirely controlled by an impartial formula, though, the whole thing seems silly. I say just not even worry about it at all. Enough people will come to record a show no matter what our rank is.

The thing I worry about is that—and this isn't a criticism, Louis—in the absence of our studio episodes, we're starting to lose a significant part of the audience. Granted, we may be gaining some audience because of the novel way they're recorded, but I think there are still a lot of people out there who won't be spoiled until the show comes in for local broadcast. And there are a lot of people for whom Doctor Who in any given week isn't just about the new episode coming out that week.

So I worry that in chasing after TalkShoe ratings we might run the risk of lowering our overall ratings/utility. I would suggest that we not use Talk Shoe in this same "raw" way after we conclude the end-of-series discussion. Rather, use it to compose an edited 30 minute feedback segment within a regular Podshock.

Here are the top five ratings criteria for placement within catagory.

Talkcasts are now priority-ordered within categories and searches based on five key criteria: 1) Recorded in last 30 days; 2) At least five recorded episodes; 3) At least one recorded episode; 4) Future episode scheduled; and 5) Custom image.

There are more metrics for the ratings but those are the key 5. If you really want to know the game listen to ep 36 off of this feed-

No idea as to metrics for placement of Paying top ten members, it ust guarntees placement within that group. And I am sure that Dave Nelson hasn't had to think of an answer for the time when more than 10 in any given category are paying for a Top Ten place.

Just a quoted repost of the metrics for placement within category above. Of course this does not count those who pay.

    Mike M.

We can't ask Louis to add to his workload - but I could see it would be possible to do Talkshoe as 'Round Table disscussion' that stays on the Talkshoe site 'as is' (rough, ready & raw) and when the Louis, Ken & James Podshocks are resumed then a 20 or 30 minutes 'best of roundtable' is dropped in as a segment - obviously no images (except a place holder image) and minium post audio work.

Or maybe to two could co-exist?

Even numbered Podshock (Studio version) ie 90,92,94 done fortnightly and Live versions 91,93,93 done on alternate weeks.

Maybe one of the upcoming Live shows could give over some time to discussing this - ie after the recording has stopped.

Maybe to help Louis out we should take a leaf out of the BBCs book - and have a 'Louis Lite' episode where a 'Second Unit' makes the Live cast.

Maybe now James has aquired 'Master' status he could chair the Live versions - alternating with Louis' Studio ones?

And there's always Colin - snapping at James' heels! Big Grin

Well, as a means of delivering time-sensitive information, as in the desire to release these season-reviewing TalkCasts as close to the date of the release of the episode as possible, then I think it's well understood why we might accept the severe lack of quality. However, as a delivery for any old topic? No, I don't think it makes quite so much sense. Do we subject listners to two static-filled hours of "What was your favorite Pertwee episode?" Or do we ask the question then just lift out the best comments for a 15-minute insert into a normal podcast? Fine, leave the 2-hour ramble on the TalkShoe site (cause, well, ya have to), but in no way do you just release the whole thing un-edited.

TalkShoe has its place, but its use needs to be curtailed until and unless their sound quality improves beyond that of a normal telephone line. I would be much more in favor of useing Skype to connect the hosts and then have a spot in the Skype conference that could be rotated around for the "current caller". Yeah, you lose the ability for the audience to hear the thing as it's being put together, but you still have the ability to take an unlimited number of callers, the sound quality is way better, and people will once again have to download the episode to hear it in full.

We need to stop treating beta software as if it's something reliable. It's not. The quality is awful. It's good enough for those participating on the day, but as something to listen to afterwards, it's awfully poor.

I would like to chime in my two cents. As a podcaster myself and a podcast listener, the ONLY reason why I listen to the TalkShoe episodes is because I have seen the episodes and I want to hear what other Doctor Who fans think. As a weekly podcast, I'm longing for the high quality production of the normal Podshocks. Talkshoe is good for a quick fix, but I wouldn't want to listen to those as the quality is horrible. There's a few times that I nearly blew my ear out on the train headed to work. The volume would be low and then someone would cough into the mic or bang a mic and it's over!

Now understanding that putting together a podcast takes time, I like Darth Skeptical's suggestion of using Skype to do mini-conference calls for a future round table discussion.

Since the season is over, I'm looking forward to the regular shows coming back. Whatever is decided, I tip my hat off to all of you who work hard in putting Podshock together. Thank you!

Just checked on TalkShoe and in our section we are now in No 1 spot.

Over on Podcast Alley - where I've just voted for July we're at No 17.
