[Quote  by:  tarashnat] Even better, is that my M-Audio Mobile Pre USB is in my greedy little mitts today.

    Oh, joy!

The strength of my noise is now 25 dB's less that it was with my previous setup. And I can now record in true stereo... I was using my cleanest channel last time to minimize the noise, as one channel was much noisier than the other. I have been playing with the M-Audio, and the results were worth it. I just may have to record my Jubilee review again for myself, but I'm now working on my next one.

Cool. I am looking forward to what you do next... especially now as your set up has gone up a few notches.

    The possibilities are endless...

Hmmmm. Funny you should say that... I've just finished recording my latest review. I was not happy with what I recorded on Tuesday on many levels. Not only was the sound quality as dodgy as my last review, but it was just too long and wordy. I then set to cutting it down by about two minutes, and getting a very good recording. This next review will not be as creative as Jubilee, but I am happy with it none the less. And I use cricket references...

[Quote  by:  Louis] You may have other settings already set up on that track, so you need to reset all those settings again on the new track...

    Could you duplicate the track?

I think it's time for me to get out of the flat, and socialize for a few hours...

Just to summarize for those interested, the Big Finish reviews that I've recorded (except for the first two) use the following hardware/software:

    Hardware
Power Macintosh G5 dual 2 GHz w/ 7 GB RAM
    M-Audio Mobile Pre USB
2x Radio Shack Unidirectional Dynamic Microphones
2x Radio Shack Desktop Microphone stands

    Software
    SoundStudio 3 (recording new material)
GarageBand 3 (recording new material and mixing tracks)
iPhoto 6 (for photos used in enhanced podcasts)
iTunes 6 (for clips from recordings)
Audio Hijack Pro (getting sounds in the right format for import where conversion utilities don't exist)

I usually send Louis a final mix in enhanced podcast format from GarageBand. To get info on how Podshock is put together, you'll have to dig through the posts above.

Thanks for the redirect to this thread. I'll have to read it again in more detail later. A lot of this went right over my head. Obviously, I'm just getting into possibly creating a podcast. I like how you guys are able to have a discussion from three separate locations and it all sounds really good.

After reading all of this equipment and set-up you and Louis do Taras it is kinda funny how simple a processs I use to record a sefment for the show. My equipment consists of an old Packard Bell microphone (which amazing still works) and recording the segment first through Audicity(sp) and then converting it into a MP3 through iTunes.

Now if I had a Mac and Garageband, heck my revoews woudl be alot fancier like Tara's but heck maybe I am just mroe of a low tech guy. BTW, look for another review from me coming up. I hope to record in the next day or 2 so I can get it on the next Podcast. I just gotta find some queit time in my house and record it. I unfortunately have my computer in a fairly open space so it makes it tricky to record and avoid alot of background noise.

    Cheers,

Thanks for the heads-up Taras, I see they also had updated some of the drivers for the PPC based Macs as well last month for OS 10.4.5, that I was unaware of until now.

    Hey Everybody,
I have a question or two for all you boffins Smile
I am trying to figure out how to interview a friend of mine in New Zealand who runs The New Zealand Doctor Who
Fan Club and TSV and who was instrumental in getting
a lost episode back to the BBC a few years back.

I'm pretty new to all this recording stuff (as James will
attest to) is it possible to record a skype conversation in say Audacity? if not is it possible with anything freeware and easy to use Smile

    Thanks in Advance

"Oh My God! I'm the tin dog!"

"Oh and Yes... I did interview Gigi Edgley.. just in case you were wondering... yes Gigi... Chiana from Farscape, Yup I interviewed her... in person you know...

Since both Skype and Audacity are multi-platform applications, I am unsure what platform you are using (Mac, Windows, Linux, etc.). If you are using Mac OS X, you can use applications such as Audio Highjack or WireTap to record the audio out of Skype and then synch it up in Audacity... or if you rather avoid the synch problems you can use a utility such as Line In to channel the audio from Skype and your live mic into Audacity as one audio source.

I am not sure about the Windows side or other platforms, there may be similar apps and utilities available for Windows XP. Perhaps someone else can chime in about them.

    Cheers,
    Louis

For those pining for a live Podshock chat session? 'Skypecasts' Allow 100-Person Conferencing may eventually allow something like this to happen...

I have another quick question for you about the podcast. Your use of the enhanced AAC file is interesting. I like how you can embed links and such in the file. What do you use to do that, and can you point me to some good references for making enhanced podcasts? I'm assuming that the AAC files are only usable with iTunes and iPods. Is that correct? Do you know roughly how many of your listeners use the standard MP3 versus the enhanced AAC?

Looking forward to listening to the latest Podshock on my trainride home.

AAC files are not limited to iTunes and the iPod, but for the enhanced features of the Enhanced Podcast AAC files we create (i.e. images, chapters, links, etc.), may be limited to iTunes and/or iPod ( I am not sure if any other players take advantage of the Enhanced Podcast AAC files at this point).

Before the release of Garageband version 3 (part of iLife '06), I used to use a utility called PodcastAV (I believe that is the name)... But since the release of version 3 of Garageband, it allows for editing the Enhanced Podcast features right in same application I use for editing the podcast. So it is a bit easier doing it all in one app now.

Most of our downloads are for the Enhanced Podcast... roughly about 75% of our downloads are for the Enhanced Podcast AAC. The remainder obviously downloading the MP3 version.

    Cheers,
    Louis

I know Garageband is Mac software (like you said, part of iLife), and it looks like PodcastAV is Mac software, too. Anyone know of any PC software capable of editing the AAC file format? I'll keep searching online.

    thanks for the info, Louis
